Can we recycle the filters?

I would also love an answer or suggestion for how to more effectively dispose of, recycle, upcycle, or rip apart these to at least keep some of it out of the landfill and into better waste streams. It is a huge chunk of mixed materials (compared to the minimal non-recyclable, non-compostable waste we usually produce in our household) and it's a reason I'm reluctant to replace the filters...even when we start to notice the air quality or fan noise changing to indicate that it's overdue. I already vacuum off the outer layer to get a bit more life out of an existing filter, but that doesn't solve the eventual problem of disposal.

I’ve been using my filter (on and off) for 2 months in NYC and it’s saying to change it already says it needs replacement, this seems fast, advice?.

I think it depends on how frequently you use the air filtration system. I live in CA and bought it for all the seasonal wild fires we get in Northern California (I use the "Toxin" type filter they sell). Mine was dirty, i mean really dirty visibly after only 1 month of use during last years fires. However we had it on occasionally during the winter and it barely got dirty at all over a 4-5 month period and didn't need replacing. The air is getting bad here in California (again) and so we've had it on 24/7 for the past few weeks to filter all the toxins out of the air (from the fires).

Why is the original filter darker than the replacement filter after 6 months?

I think the change in color is caused by dust. The filter that has been used for 6 months will look darker because it is full of all the dust that the filter has collected over that time period. The new filter has no dust in it, so it still looks white.

Is it normal for my levoit to sound different after replacing the filter?

My purifier always sounds quieter after I change the filter. It gets louder as the filter gets dirtier. (But not real loud)
