TomTom worked great in Europe!
I'm rating the GPS unit and Amazon's great shipping a 5 out of 5. I wanted to actually use it before writing an official review. Doesn't make sense to write a review if you haven't used the product while traveling the world :) Before purchasing the Tom Tom World Traveler I read a lot of bad reviews first which led me to some crucial information that wasn't included with the GPS or Amazon's product description. 1. My GPS did not come preloaded with European maps. I had to pay an additional $50 for that map pack. The maps were on sale when I purchased this unit the last week of July 2015. I think regular price is $80+ 2. There's only enough built in storage (4GB) for one map pack at a time. This means that you cannot have both USA and Europe maps installed at the same time. Is there an SD card expansion slot? YES thankfully! I upgraded it to 16GB to future proof it. Don't waste your money on 32GB which is the max for this device because it's overkill. After the storage upgrade I was able to install all the map packs I needed. 3. You have to install the Tom Tom application on your computer and connect the GPS unit to it via USB to update maps or install new ones. Some people complained about the GUI for the TomTom desktop application in other reviews I read but I found it easy to use to be honest. Maybe it's just the computer nerd in me :) 4. Once you've done all of the above the GPS works great in Europe. Countries I visited on my trip were Belgium, Netherlands, Poland (very rural area with unamed roads and still was able to get to my destination from Warsaw airport), and Croatia. I had no problem with satellite signal whatsoever.5. I would really recommend this GPS if you are a patient person with a couple hours to spare to install the maps (45 mins - 1 hour for download and install of maps).6. Once you have installed the maps you have to go into the GPS settings and select Europe. It will not automatically work if you just show up in Europe and try to use it. Did this before I left the State's so I wouldn't have to fool around with the GPS when I got my rental car in Belgium.7. Only the USB power adapter worked for me in the Alpha Romeo I rented in Belgium. Luckily I brought both the USB adapter and cigarette adapter. There was no USB port in an Opel I rented but the cigarette lighter worked fine. It seemed like it was hit and miss. Basically what I'm recommending is that you bring both of your power adapters to be on the safe side. I am very glad someone put that in their review and I brought both the USB and cigarette lighter adapters with me.8. Buy an inexpensive travel case to store the GPS and power adapter. Protect your investment... That's a no brainer.9. POIs worked great especially for gas stations, shopping centers, restaurants, airport, tourist attractions, etc.I think that covers everything. If you have any questions just ask.

The Horror Stories are true! I thought the bad reviews were exaggerated. They are not!
The Horror Stories are true! I thought the bad reviews were exaggerated. They are not!You buy the world Traveler addition but the serial number of the device only comes with North American .maps. I had to spend 45 minutes with tech support to straighten it out. They required me to take a picture of the box where it says life time North American and European maps. The download server for map updates was painfully slow. It took 12 hours to download 8 gigs (I have a fast connection, BTW). There is only enough room for either The North American Maps or the European maps at a time. I bought a Flash Memory card so I could store both. Even that was a hassle. Finally I was finally able to download the maps and the unit would reboot during the update. I checked the knowledge base about the problem. Not very helpful. Eventually, I figured it out my self, a USB update from dell did the trick(So on this one I give TomTom a pass). Finally, I bought this unit specifically for a trip to Greece.PROS: It works great keeping you from getting lost, it has a great detail on all the roads. If you punch in a known location like your hotel, it will get you there regardless how many goat trails are between you and your destination.Cons: Points of Interest is missing the most famous of sites. Many locations and streets had no English translation.(Does Garmin Do a better job?)How I used this unit; If I had a data connection I used google maps on my smart phone.(superior in every way.) Though you never know when you are going to lose Cell coverage. So I always had the TomTom running concurrently.

This was very frustrating since my Google maps on my smart phone COULD find those same places
In the past, I have used a Garmin when renting a car three separate times. The problem I had with Garmin is that it was not able to find some of my locations. This was very frustrating since my Google maps on my smart phone COULD find those same places. I checked out some of the reviews in Amazon and decided to buy this Tom Tom instead. So far, it has done everything that I need it to do and it has found every single location that I have requested from it. I put it through the paces to see what it would do when I refused to follow its recommended route. Recalculations were fast. The split display that comes up when I approached a complicated road situation was very helpful and made it less difficult to see my through it so that I could make decisions early enough while driving without needing to suddenly change my road position in the middle of traffic. It downloads all the maps you need into the device including the International ones. This does take a long time (about 1 1/2 hours for the first time). Later on, your PC will notify you when there is an update, and you simply connect up the Tom Tom to the PC and it downloads automatically. The updates take much less time (usually about 10-15 minutes). Some reviewers have said it was a bear to download and make connection to the internet. This is true if you are a more savvy computer user who is trying to do it the normal way that you usually do to download things. To download these maps, you must download their free app that does these downloads for you onto your PC and then will transfer them to your Tom Tom. It does it very efficiently behind the scenes and does it all for you without you needing to even think about it. While it is connected to your PC, if you try to locate the Tom Tom on your PC for connected devices, it will never show up there even though it is connected and downloading maps. An excellent product for a very good price.

A must for European travel.
This is a great product. I bought is for going over seas and travelling in the U.K., France and Belgium. It was cheaper to buy this portable unit than to rent a car with sat/nav. I updated all the maps before our trips and I was amazed at how well it worked. We traveled extensively and were never lost or confused. It even warned us of upcoming camera areas and alternate route due to construction. Lots of warning ahead of time to make your turns and clear visuals as well. Can also use it in cities for foot travel as long as the battery lasts. Worked well in night mode as well. Updates easy.Would not be with out it. Good for North America as well.

Great..
The GPS came loaded with Canada US and UK maps. I decided to update the UK just to make sure I had the most current edition for our upcoming trip. I followed the instructions for down load by first removing the UK maps to make room for the new edition. A message came up stating that there wasn't sufficient room on the device to install the new edition. Great...... my options were to put a new card in it for additional space or look for other ways to reduce the volume in the GPS. My model didn't come with a port to load a new card, so that was out.To create new space, I then proceeded to removed all the voices except for the one I would be using. That created some space but not sufficient. Frustration set in and I was trying all sorts. Final solution was to only import that section of the UK maps that I would be using. As it turned out, UK maps can be down loaded in section...who knew? I found the instruction manual for this product was less that helpful and put me in a position of having to proceed with a down load through trial and error. This is not what I expect of a new product....the whole process was frustrating to say the least. The product functioned well during the trip which was a relief after initially loosing faith at the outset. You would expect that if the machine came with the maps already installed, you would be able to update them very easily. Not in this case!
