Great camera. Really 4 1/2 stars but I rounded up.
Great car camera for the money. This item is essentially 3 pieces. You stick the small square GPS receiver on your windshield with the supplied sticky back tape, attach the 10ft power cable to it, then click the camera body into the GPS receiver, The camera can swivel 90 degrees on its vertical axis so you can get it pointed up and down properly. There is no horizontal movement so depending on the curve of your windshield, placing the camera in the center may offer the best picture. The theory is that the unit is (semi) permanently mounted in your vehicle and records everything it sees and hears. It is like your own private "black box" recording that could save your butt. Once the memory is full It will always overwrite the oldest clips. You can choose the length of each clip (either 1min / 3min / 5min). This means you always have the last 30 - 240+ minutes of your trip depending on the size of the card, resolution, and quality you choose. Clips can be "locked" so that they are not overwritten and saved until the card is formatted. You can manually lock a clip with a button press, or if you turn on the G-Sensor the camera will automatically lock a clip if it senses a big enough jolt. You can adjust the sensitivity of the G-Sensor - which is a good idea otherwise your card will fill up with 'jolts' caused by potholes, bumpy roads, or even that last moment when you are stopping. I use a 32Gig card and record at 1080p / S-Fine Resolution and get about 4 hours.Screen size is small, but very clear and sharp. Considering the camera is not really designed to be the main playback device it's not too bad. The only real time you would 'watch' something on the screen is when you are trying to show the police what happened and prove that you were not at fault. Otherwise to simply watch a "close call" either pull the memory card and watch on a computer, or use the HDMI out to watch on a TV.The GPS model is well worth getting as when playing the video the GPS data can be used to show speed, distance, map location, time, etc. This can be useful for logging mileage on a trip as the software accesses maps (like yahoo maps or google maps) and shows you where you have traveled. The camera comes with viewing software that is written to the card when it is formatted. I tried several (the one that came with the camera, Registrator Viewer, and Earthshine). The one that came with the camera is decent, but my personal favorite is Registrator Viewer. Neither the included software or Registrator Viewer are Mac friendly, but Earthshine is.Battery life is okay, but I would have liked it to be just a tad longer. The battery will last 5-7 minutes which is barely long enough to pull up the clip and play a 5 min clip in its entirety for the police, But if need be, you could always plug in the power and watch that way. I would have like to have seen a 10-15 min battery. Please note, this is not an "Action Camera" and not really meant to be used as such. The short battery life means that the unit must have a constant power supply, the small screen makes framing shots difficult. Additionally, the bit rates for car camera as less than action cameras. If you want an action camera buy one for that purpose. If you want to make this camera 'dual purpose you will just kick yourself down the road. One reviewer mentioned the looseness of the camera in the GPS. I can confirm there is a small issue. The problem appears to be with the GPS mount and not the camera. I have two of these cameras and both bodies are very snug in one mount and just a fraction loose in the other. I suspect the cause to be one of two things... Either the tolerances for the width of the opening on the GPS that the camera snaps into are not super strict or heat from the sun beating down on a small black square stuck to the windshield of a car is causing the GPS opening to expand slightly. This has not caused me any issues, the "looseness" is not sufficient to cause the pins that supply power to the camera to disconnect. I suspect that if one wanted to stretch a piece of electrical tape very thin it could be stuck to the edge of the camera mount and fix the problem. The camera can be purchased with or without internal memory. Both types have the ability to record to an external micro SD card. You can NOT record to both at the same time. I recommend buying a camera with internal memory, and recording to an external card. First and foremost the camera can copy a video clip from the card to the camera, so if needed you could turn the card over to law enforcement and still maintain a copy of the relevant clip(s). Secondly, it saves on wear and tear of the mount system if you wanted to leave the camera attached and only remove the card.Speaking of memory cards - Some have brought up the 'issue' of certain cards not working well. This does happen, but it is not uncommon, even across many many brands of car cameras. This is most prevalent with very fast cards - ironically the cards you think would work best (Sandisk Extreme for example) don't work very well, The issue arises due to the nature of how a car camera works - a car camera makes a lot of small video clips - (1 / 3 / 5 min) and these need to be SEAMLESS video clips. A lot of car cameras have issues when the card is writing so fast because it either cant finish creating the clip because it is already fully written - or it can't start a new clip because the one it just finished is already gone there is no reference for the new clip. Does it make sense? No... But it is not uncommon. One of the cameras I purchased here on amazon came with a generic (Kingmax) class 6 card and I have had no problems with dropped frames etc. I use a Sony class 10 in my other camera with no issues. Bottom line is you don't need a super high speed card anyway, the bit rates aren't high enough to make use of it (and it may not work). If you like Sandisk for their quality and reliability (as I do) then consider the Sandisk Ultra. The biggest 'complaint' I have is with the 1296p video - there is no discernible difference between 1296 and 1080 - None, Zero, Nada. There is more data being recorded at 1296p as the file sizes are larger and the bit rate is higher but that added data does not seem to show up in the actual video. My second issue (or rather something I would change) is the vertical rotation. 90 degrees is plenty fine if you use the camera with the GPS stuck to the windshield as the camera is facing forward. I would have loved to have seen more rotation so that the camera could be stuck to the back of the rear view mirror and pointed backwards out the front windshield.Overall the video is actually quite good (for a dash cam), the HDR (High Dynamic Range) gives excellent night video. The video is not pixelated and blocky. Very crisp and clear with good color. It is very comparable to the daytime quality of newer cell phone video (IPhone 5 / Samsung S4 / Similar) - and better at night. It is a wide angle lens so when mounted near the center of the windshield you can see both sides of the front of your vehicle. Being a wide angle lens there is a small amount of fish eye effect but it is very minimal and the only way to get the desired wide angle view.Another reviewer mentioned the heat. Yes the unit does get warm, quite warm. I have several small cameras (action cams, car cams, mini cams) and they all get quite warm. It is the nature of the beast when you put this many electronic chips and 'stuff' in a small package.Pros:- Good quality video.- No lag between clips.- HDR (High Dynamic Range) is great at night.- GPS acquires quickly even in the rain.- Nice wide angle view with limited 'fish eye' effect.- Auto start recording when powered on.- Strong adhesive,- Ability to copy clips from the card to the camera.- Compact and does not block your line of sight.- Nice screen quality, considering...- Price is actually quite fair for something of this quality.Cons:- Very little visual difference between 1296P and 1080P, even when cropping.- Battery Life could be better- Potential for the mount to be a bit loose.- Some very high speed cards are too fast for the camera. All of the "cons" are very nit picky, with the exception of the 1296p VS 1080p issue, but the bottom line is that you can't buy this camera expecting 'Action Camera' quality. The quality is very good mind you - smooth and better than some action cams - but don't go into this thinking you are getting GoPro quality video. It is designed to save your butt when someone backs in to you and claims you rear-ended them; or when someone tries to claim you ran a stop sign / red light; or when someone says they had the right of way and it's 'your' fault. This camera is more than capable of doing that, plus it can capture the 'cool' stuff too with very good quality.******** UPDATE ******It's been about 5 months since this review, and I wanted to let folks know how it preforms over time. I would still recommend this car camera and still give it the same rating. I have been very pleased and have had no issues to report. My units survived a hot southern summer without issue and powers up and records daily. I would purchase again in a heartbeat.

One of my best purchases.
I am astonished by the video quality on this camera. I leave it at the 1080p "fine" settings and it almost look professional. The audioquamity it great, too. It's small so noone I'll see it. I have mine right under my rear-view and someone has yet to notice it.When I first got it, it did get really hot. But since I lowered the video quality (to 1080p) it only gets somewhat warm. I live in Texas, so by leaving it in my car I've subjected it to temperatures ranging from 20F to 100F and it still works perfectly. Try as I might I just can't find find a noteworthy flaw.I highly recommend this camera.

Don't ignore the negative reviews
Please do yourself a favor and try to resist the allure. I read the reviews and did not want to believe their claims. I paid $150 in Sept 2014. Today, Dec 2014, as always the car started, the camera sounded its pleasant jingle indicating it was recording. The jingle did not stop this time. The unit is locked up. There is no response from the buttons. I am guessing it will continue until the internal battery is dead.Update: the battery died and I charged it back up. The alarm stopped. I hooked the camera back up to the mount and then connected the usb. I heard a snap, the usb mount broke. Could be sunlight, temp variation, I dont know. I would like to try again but at this price I don't think they are ready for prime time.In my other car I installed Powerucc PANORAMA 2S Full HD(1080p, 30fps) SONY CMOS Dashcam Car Blackbox DVR recorder + Multi Safer + GPS...it is $70 more but way more substantial. This is a great camera.

E-Prance makes audible pulsing sound.
I recently installed in my car. After only three weeks use it has begun intermittently begun making an audible pulsing sound. And it gets extremely hot and stops recording although video display works. After disconnecting from power and cooling down, it seems to operate for a few hours normally, then pulsing sound and heat are experienced again. Very disappointed.

Good starter camera
It is ok for $89. You will not be able to read a license plate with it. The one feature on the menu that is for monitoring you vehicle while it is parked must be turned to the off position, otherwise the camera will be constantly making a sqwaking noise while you are driving your vehicle. Mount the camera behind your rearview mirror so the cops can not say that it is "blocking your view". It is a good starter camera. Mike D
