A lovely well acted film directed by William Wyler with humour and values missing in many modern films, which I tend to turn off after 20 minutes of dismay and boredom. Filmed in widescreen I enjoyed every minute, as the story is well written and the colour is amazing. It’s one of those rare films you could watch several times and still see something you missed, but alas there is probably not enough bad language, anger and killings for the majority of sad people. Although some now find Gary Cooper bland and boring, I couldn’t see another actor in that part of a Quaker farmer, repressed by his chosen religion. The film shows the restrictions and beliefs that religion can impose which are tested and broken by circumstances of survival. The region 1 edition has an added bonus of behind the scene clips with cast going through the motions.During that great period of filmmaking I think it’s a shame that more than one film wasn’t made of the same story, as a director like John Ford and supported by his stock company would have certainly made a completely different film. It would have been interesting to compare the difference, even though I don’t believe it could have been bettered.

great film
I vaguely remembered this film from my youth in the 50s when in the era of Westerns I thought it lacked 'action'. Now I see that it never needed action. It stands up well as a good-natured film not lacking in good humour with a moral which is that war is to be avoided at all costs but sometimes ' a man has to do what a man has to do'. Thankfully Gary Cooper is restrained in this familiar role and does not dominate the story.. I can see why Anthony Perkins won an award.

I think I was a teenager when first seeing this film and I fell in love with it. I had been trying to find it for years and blow me down when finding it on Amazon. It couldn't get here quick enough. Seeing it through the eyes of my adulthood I was a little disappointed in the film but only because I had built it up to such an extent in my mind. The feeling quickly passed though as the story unfolded and the charm and humour of this tale soon had me squirming with pleasure. It is a delightful, feel good, family entertainment and I heartily recommend it to anyone. In this era of political correctness it cannot surely offend anyone.

A disappointing film.
I have always enjoyed Gary Coopers acting but I found this film very disappointing. The storyline was difficult to follow and I didn't get to the end I am afraid.

I bought this film for my wife who watched it as a child on the TV and remembered it as a light heated comedy with little violence. If you like old fashioned family films this one will do. It has Gary Cooper and Dorothy McGuire in the leading roles as the parents of the Birdwell family, with Marjorie Main in a brilliant supporting role. It portrays the ups and downs of the everyday life of the Birdwell family, as peace loving Quakers living during the American civil war. Marjorie Main as Ma Hudspeth and her daughters will definitely have you laughing. The humour is throughout the film, with touches of humanity and warmth. The Birdwells try to avoid any involvement in the war but eventually get drawn into it and their beliefs are tested.

Marvellous film, my wife's favourite. I had an old copy on VHS but that has long gone. I've been looking for a Region 2 dvd copy for years, but only ever Region 1 (USA). So in desperation I bought an All Region Toshiba dvd recorder from Amazon and we watch this dvd often. If you copy my approach do make sure your TV will accept the American NTSC format, which in incompatible with the UK PAL.They really don't make them like this any more!

ever been done
I bought this in good faith a few months ago. when I finally got round to playing it last week it would not play apparently it is only for America and Canada. I think this should be made clearer as I have never heard of this before and am left with a dvd I cannot watch unless I move to America.
