top heavy
This is a wonderful lamp with the exception that it is top heavy. it tips over way too easily because the base isn't heavy enough to support the lamp.

Just bought my 3rd Ott-Lite wing-Shade Table Lamp
I've had two of these table lamps for years. I recently broke one and did not hesitate to order another one. I was mildly surprised to see reviews that the lamp easily tips over. The lamp does have a round, flat base that's not very heavy. However, the only way I can get the lamp base to lift up is when I bend the arm down low. (I don't ever need it that low and just tried it after reading the reviews.) I've never had trouble with them tipping and have never had to replace the bulbs. I have one on my home-office desk and usually keep the arm and shade turned towards my computer sceen and keyboard. Sometimes I adjust the shade towards where I'm either working on a painting project or doing paperwork at the desk, or just painting my nails. Sometimes I adjust it to the other side of the room where I might be doing some sewing or ironing and want a little more light. It gives off a lot of light, is easily adjustable, and is dependable.

Great lighting for detail work - but needs heavier base
.I've heard about OttLite lamps and how great they are, but I never took it too seriously - after all, what could be so different between my present desk lamp and this newfangled light?Fortunately, I had a chance to see an OttLite in a friend's office. The light it produces is remarkable.I ordered one for myself and I'm happy I did. It makes small details easily visible, even for my grandfather's aging eyes.4 stars instead of 5 because there's not enough weight in the lamp's base, making it unstable. After the lamp fell off the desk a couple of times, I tried a fix that worked -- removed the bottom cover (requires a TINY screwdriver) and discarded the almost ineffective ballast included by the manufacturer, and replaced it with one pound of small lead fishing line sinkers. Then replaced the bottom plate. The fix worked! The base is more stable now. (The 1-lb bag of sinkers cost $4.00 at a local bait shop, but worth it.)Would I recommend the OttLite to a friend? Sure! I love it.

Disappointing
And when I say disappointing I'm being generous. I read a lot. I got this light to use for reading and have it on the same table as my computer keyboard. The worst part is that it's top heavy. The arm with the light causes the base to tip over. To make things worse the lamp uses the type of bulb that may easily start fires so I'm always nervous that I'll forget to turn it off, it will tip over and start a fire. Also, the bulbs are expensive so if the lamp tips and falls and the bulb breaks I'll have to pay another $13 to replace it. I find myself continually readjusting the light because of its instability and the longer I use it the lamp arm begins to sink lower and lower over my book. The lamp falls onto my keyboard so I'm forever sitting back upright and escaping out of or repairing whatever damage it's done online. The good news is the lighting is good and adequate. I know I should box this back up and head back to the post office with it but I'm unwilling to stand in line for an hour or so. This is one of the most horrible products I've ever bought on Amazon. In all my years shopping here I think this is my first one star review. Don't buy this lamp.

Good light but the head won't stay up
I got this lamp for my son to use at his desk. The light is definitely kinder to his eyes and in general I'm glad I got it. HOWEVER, the neck is unable to support the weight of the head so no matter how many times I pull it up it keeps drooping. Since the neck isn't all that long to begin with, the head ends up getting in the way of what my son is reading. I would give this product a 4-star if this problem is fixed.

Good Price But Top Heavy
I love the black, and love the shape and size. Perfect for the piano. A tube LED makes music very easy to read. However, it is top heavy, no matter which way I tried to adjust the shape. The neck is not very flexible and the best way to get light from the lamp onto the music was to turn it so it hangs over the front of the piano, which looks weird (photo included). Another reviewer on this lamp mentioned getting some lead fishing weights, opening the stand and put the weights inside. I tried that but the weights kept falling out and I couldn't figure out how to keep them in, not put any force against electrical wires, and still get it closed again. So I just stacked them in their little bag on top of the base. It works ok, but if we have another earthquake like we did recently, those weights may go rolling, and the lamp will topple over scraping the beautiful highgloss finish of my brand new piano.

Wonderful Light
I have two of these lights, love the intense light for close work. Like other users have reported, I find them top heavy and likely to tip over. Here's an easy and elegant solution: I used 3 short screws to fasten the lamp base to an 8 x 12 X 1/2 inch bamboo cutting board--attractive and functional.

Tippy, but works (for a while).
Am using it to light an external keyboard (with separate display) for my laptop. My first lamp died after a year (it uses an expensive proprietary fluorescent tube, single loop style). Liking the inovative lamp, I ordered 2 replacement tubes ... wrong move! Seems the problem was that the electronic "ballast" in the lamp's base had died, and the replacement tubes did not fix the light. Now I had 2 useless tubes costing more than the lamp itself, so decided to replace the whole lamp. Had I known about the electronic ballast being in the base originally, I would instead have opted for a "swing-lamp" and used CFLs. A caveat about CFLs ... they have their electronic ballast built into their ceramic bases, so when a CFL dies, your replacement CFL includes a new ballast. The caveat is that CFLs' electronic ballasts cannot stand much heat, so lamp-ventilation is important for longevity.

Excellent small lamp
I purchased this through a recommendation from a chat board I visit. The lamp arrived in good time and was well packaged. Assembly was easy although inserting the light bulb had me a little worried. With that easily done as well, I placed the lamp on my table, switched it on and have enjoyed putting together my jigsaw puzzles much more since my purchase. The adjustment of the arm is easy - just lift up or push down. I really like that the on/off switch is on the base of the lamp. I haven't used the pencil holders. All in all, an excellent little lamp with enough wattage to light up a small area for close work. I love it.

I can see ....
Love this light , very bright and helps me to see my work much better .The only problem I have is that the bottom should be weighted . I use it one step higher that my working surface and it is a little tippy . All in all great light !

Top heavy
It works, but intermittently doesn't turn on for several clicks, and is very top heavy. The light is excellent though
