JIM DUNLOP Glass Large Flare Guitar Slide (235)

Just a few kinks
I believe this is a new offering. It's the first flared glass slide I've run across. As such, there are kinks to be worked out. I have several Dunlop flared brass slides, which I love, to compare it with. I know it's much more difficult to make flared glass than to make flared brass, so take my critcim with a grain of salt.Kinks: the transition between the straight and flared parts of the slide needs to be smoother and at less of an angle. The transition here is abrupt and at too wide an angle, which results in the flared end being way too big. It goes from an inner diameter of 20 mm up to a whopping 28 mm at the flared end, an increase of 8mm. Among my brass flared slides, the biggest increase is 4mm (Dunlop #231, Harris slide). My other two flared brass slides, Dunlop #284 and #285 Preachin Pipes increase by only 1 mm.This is the Medium size. I don't think they make a small size in this model. It weighs In at about 1.7 oz. which is a very comfortable weight and makes it easy to hold on to. A brass heavy brass slide that fits this loosely would fly off the finger.Despite a few kinks, this is still an excellent slide with a sweet tone and smooth movement and I'm glad I got it.

Too light-weight for heavier strings.
I've played bottleneck/slide since 1970, and have used everything from chrome plated steel tubing to cutting my wine & liquor bottle necks for my own use, and for students. It's always made sense, to my way of thinking, that a slide should have a somewhat curved surface if you're playing a guitar on which the strings are curved to the fingerboard contour. They will touch all the strings (if that's what you want) instead of having to press down on the middle strings to reach the outer strings, as you would have to do with a straight slide. A straight slide would be fine on many National guitars. In any case I bought a pair of the Dunlop 235 slides for a student, and although they're well made, they are just not heavy/thick enough to control the mass of light gauge acoustic guitar strings. They would be fine on an electric guitar where a typical light gauge set would have much less mass. The inside diameter was fine for use on my ring finger, and I have large hands. I considered getting some lead tape to line the inside with, but instead found my student a curved brass slide, the Harris 232 Large size, also made by Dunlop. The brass has got the mass required for this application.

Good flared slide
It's called bottleneck slide for a reason. Early rural blues players had little option other than a sawed off wine bottle neck. Aside from the more authentic sound, the flared contour also allows more control and cuts down on overtones. My only complaint is that I prefer to use my pinkie finger to allow for chording and for a medium slide this is on the large size. Heavy walled glass has a nice smooth mellow sound but, overall, I prefer the better fit, sustain, and punch of the flared brass Eric Sardinos' Preachin Pipe.

Try it: you'll like it!
I primarily use a medium flared slide. However I bought both because I was uncertain if the medium would fit too tight. I have found that the flare allows for better contact with the strings

Medium is very large.
Very large. There is nothing ‘medium’ about the 234 size. Using it on my 65mm middle digit and its all over the place. Best as a thumb slide.

The only slide that fits me.
I have purchased at least 10-12 slides and this is the only one I can get over my knuckles, and I mean from the smaller end. It's thick enough to provide a rich sound, but the concave shape requires a little getting used to.

Pretty big
A lot bigger than I thought it would be. Has a nice tone but She's pretty big! Then again if you roll the slide as you get to a note you do get a pretty vibrato to your sounds!
