Q: How many heating elements are there on the top and bottom?

One on top, One on Bottom. Toasts very evenly 4 pieces of bread. Reheats Pizza perfectly. Have had no issues. Love the unit.

Q: Has anyone experienced a burnt plastic smell when this toaster was initially used?

I am purchasing this oven today though i work for an industrial supply company, a burning plastic smell is common concern with new heaters and ovens such as this, let it run for a while for a a bit everyday for a few days or just use it a few times. smell should fad after 5 to 10 uses... if not after 15, contact the manufacture.

Q: Does it toast toast fine, or does it come out like a untoasted cracker?

I had the earlier version (much earlier- 1989 version) until it was destroyed by a taco in 2016. It was far superior in every way including the most important- toast. This new product takes FOREVER to make toast. If you put 4 slices of bread in the ones in the back will cook before/darker than the ones in front, but each slice is relatively even top/bottom, and yes tastes like toast after you starve to death waiting for it to be done. Man I miss my old Black and Decker. Also the knobs are a terrible downgrade in the user interface. The old one had a doneness knob and plunger, you worked it just like a standard toaster and could cut it off with a flick of your finger. This one you have to rotate the hard to move knob counter clokcwise to off-- and its very hard to turn. It is pain in the neck to use and I would not get it ever again...though for cooking it works pretty good.

Q: Can you use aluminum foil in this oven

Look at the photo from Pam where she's covered a large pan that just fits completely with foil where her handle melted off. Do not cover any [significant] part of this oven with metal foil. This will cause overheating and eventual blackening of the oven. Only use on a small pan for a limited time. Do NOT listen to runs with scissors Mark or CM, the shiny side of aluminum foil is only slightly shinier than the dull side, according to the Reynold’s Kitchen. No death yet is not good logic. :-)
