Useful, just keep it charged!
I used this in the vet clinic or even out when i come across strays to check pets for a microchip. It takes a while to charge, and holds its' charge for quite a few days with low use. But I forget to charge it all the time and so when I need it I have to wait to charge it - don't make my mistake. The handle is very comfortableIt will read any chip from most countries and did outperform the reader that was in the clinic already. If you encounter animals and need to check for microchips, then this is a very handy toll to have.

PLEASANTLY SURPRISED
I had a $300 Home Again microchip scanner that after many years of service despite being left out in the rain overnight TWICE and being dropped numerous times by workers, finally died. I really didn't want to spend another $300 on a scanner so I decided to give this little $79 one a try. It's a little flimsy when compared to the Home Again scanner but hey, it was a third of the price so I didn't have real high expectations to begin with. I use the Nanochips and it worked perfectly. I also tried scanning an off brand ISO chip and again, scanned perfectly. So at this point I am very happy with it. I will probably buy a second one since it was so cheap. Also I charged it in the wall with my USB phone charger and it charged fine.

Bring your pet to Europe with this scanner
This scanner worked on my cat's "24 h pet watch" brand microchip. Europe uses microchips with 15 numbers and a different frequency than the USA (10 digits&letters), so if you want to bring your pet to Europe your microchip won't work. You could re-microchip your pet but that makes its vaccine records more complicated. Vaccination has to take place after microchipping, so if you re-microchip you may need a new vaccine and a 21 day waiting period. Or if you re-microchip your vaccine records would have to be meticulously to record the multiple microchip and vaccination dates -- but vets have trouble recording all of this.So a simpler option is to bring your own microchip scanner. The USA microchips are OK in Europe if you bring your own scanner. This one is priced over $100 less than the other models.

Good to have
I do rescue work and I’m constantly finding strays. I always have to carry a dog to a local vet and sometimes it’s not the best time to do it. I bought one and two weeks later I’m rescuing a pit running in and out of traffic on a major road. I scanned her at home and she was chipped.

Used under a dozen times and it just stopped
I used this under a dozen times in one year. Stopped charging and died. Had hoped it would last longer. Bummed

Works for ISO and Non-ISO Chips!
Works perfectly! Traveling to Europe with my dog and ordered this as a precaution because in the EU your dog's microchip has to be scanned and if it can't be read then your dog will not be let into the country. EU recommends purchasing your own scanner if you are unsure. Worth the money since it would cost a lot more money if my dog couldn't be scanned when we arrived in the EU and had to turn around and fly back to the USA. Gives us peace of mind while traveling with our pet!
