The 4" Auger Drill Bit is Surprisingly Good for the Cost
I modified this drill bit to use on my tractor's post hole digger. Normally the PHD is used with a 9" auger bit, but I wanted a smaller diameter bit to bore holes for planting seedlings in my orchard. I thought that for the modest cost I would buy one of these in the 4" size and try to modify it.The PHD has a 2" shaft to which an auger bit is attached. I cut off the attaching socket on this drill bit, leaving the 1" diameter (hollow) shaft. I welded a piece of steel 2-1/4" diameter with a 1" hole bored in it onto the shaft and 8 fins around the end of the shaft, each 1/2" wide. Then I welded a piece of steel pipe with a 2" inside diameter around that. (You may note that I am not the cleanest nor precise of welders.) The 2" diameter pipe had holes drilled through the sides to align with the hole through the PHD shaft. In the attached photos, one is a view down the inside of the 2" pipe showing the fins radiating out from the drill bit shaft. You can also see the holes on the side of the pipe to attach to the PHD shaft. The drill bit corkscrew came attached to the shaft by about 4 welds, I added several more welds to provide greater strength. The steel of the corkscrew is not very thick -- about 1/8". I was concerned how well it would stand up to the force of pulling dirt out of the holes. While the forces are not great on the 4" diameter model, it could increase greatly with the larger diameter models.I have now used the modified auger bit with the PHD to drill 4 holes. It has worked perfectly, although I did frequently pause the rotation to ensure it was not binding. I have plans to drill about 225 more holes for my orchard expansion this year, with potentially 3000 more in coming years, and based on what I have seen, it should do fine so long as it does not encounter any significant rocks.I will mention the tip of the drill bit seems especially well-made for a bit of this price. So while I cannot promise that the larger diameter bits will hold up under heavy use, I was able to turn the 4" version into a serviceable auger bit for less than 1 hour of work and a cost in dollars of about 1/10 what I would have had to pay a farm equipment dealer.

Do not buy this 10" auger bit!
Do not buy this 10" auger bit (to the right on the picture) unless you have pure loose garden soil 30" deep in your yard. Any clay, rocks or roots stop it from digging immediately. It was easier for me to use my 6" auger bit (on the left) and then dig out the extra few inches by hand. I never write reviews for products, but this was the worst $50 I've ever spent on Amazon and I doubt the 3rd party vendor will give me a refund since its been used.

It Fits
It fits my Sportsman Earth series 43cc gas power Auger. Its about 12 inches shorter than the original auger that came with unit, but it works perfect. Its a back-up, just in case.

This product works great with my auger. I used it for drilling holes in hard clay for my deck, went down to 2 feet with no problem
