Add a swivel!!! 7 inch swivel from amazon. Use the hardware from the seller. Purchase M6-1.00 Nylon Lock Nuts, and 6mm split locking washer. Us the supplied Hex head nut attaching the 7" swivel to the legs. Secure with the locking washer and nylon lock nut. Purchase M6-1.00 x 20 Pan Head or Hex Head or Hex Cap screws. Attach the legs with swivel with a locking washer and bolt. Easy peazy. It's easy enough to figure out on your own as well.

is the walnut finish a veneer or actual stain?

I'm pretty sure it's a veneer. There is a small part that chipped on our chair, but it is in a place that is not too visible. It's a lovely chair.
