The Sun Is Harsh On Cushions! So Far, So Good...
This is easy to apply -- convenient spray bottle. We got this for our patio set of furniture, to "re do" the polyester-clad chair cushions. We live in Arizona, where the power of the sun is legendary (mostly due to the fact that the climate is arid, so the air is thin -- more rays get through). The material had tags that said it was weather and UV protected, but that doesn't last forever. The colors are fading a little, and now when something stains the cushions, its harder to get off (as when a bird visits and leaves it's calling card on the fabric). So, after receiving the Star Brite, we wiped down the cushions with a damp, mildly soapy cloth, then let them air dry ("completely dry" as per instructions). Then, out in the open (the instructions say not to apply in a closed space), we sprayed on the waterproofing -- an even coat, deep enough to really soak in. Again, we let them dry ("approximately 6 hours") -- and that is that. It's only been a couple of weeks, so this is not the long-term test, but so far, so good. You do have to evaluate what you're doing, as this is not an inexpensive product. It's about $30/bottle right now, and we can buy new cushions for our furniture for about $45 a set (of 2), so it does require some thought -- is it worth the money and effort? However, for now, especially since we got a sample product for evaluation, it is a good alternative to laying out all that money for a whole new set for 4 x chairs. There are some things to consider: there is a "danger" warning on the bottle. "Contains petroleum distillates.... Avoid breathing mists.... Avoid contact with the eyes, skin and clothing. Use only in a well-ventilated area. If ingested...get medical attention immediately."Doesn't sound like the most benign of products, does it? But then again, these are our outdoor cushions, and they need protection, or they'll fade, stain, and finally, fall apart. We're counting on this Star Brite waterproofing to get us at least a couple more years from the set.So far, so good...Recommended.

Fabric Protectant Failed to Restore Fabric Raincoat's Water Repellancy
This STAR BRITE WATER REPEL WATERPROOFING SPRAY seems to be much more of a "fabric protectant" spray than a waterproofing spray. After reading the product description, I took a chance and tried it on an old, worn, fabric raincoat that had completely lost its ability to repel water. Unfortunately, the spray didn't work to waterproof the raincoat--it didn't even restore the repellancy to a level where raindrops or garden-hose mist would bead up on the fabric. The spray does go on completely clear, and the fabric feels flexible and breathable after an application that has thoroughly wetted the fabric. However, it's a really bad idea to apply this product to an item of clothing, because it emits a strong odor even after it seems to be completely dry. Not only do you not want to go around smelling like a chemical factory, you don't want to be inhaling the fumes! My coat lost most of the odor after drying for a week in the garage. (I wouldn't dream of trying to dry something treated with this product indoors. The label makes it clear that you should only apply the spray outdoors, in a ventilated area, and away from open flames. It's a petroleum distillate, and highly flammable.) Because it was raining outdoors, the garage was very humid, so it's no surprise that the coat took a long time to dry. But it took days--not the 6 hours suggested on the product label--for the fabric to dry to the point where the fumes weren't too noticeable. Also, getting the raincoat wet seemed to reactivate the chemical odor. I wouldn't have tried this product on my old raincoat at all, if the label hadn't suggested that the product could be used on foul-weather gear. Because of the fumes, I wouldn't recommend using this on ANY clothing. However, I would be perfectly willing to use it to protect outdoor furniture fabric. If I were to do that, I would apply the spray sparingly, in the morning on a clear day, so that the treated fabrics would have a full 6 hours to dry in the open air.Probably I will discard the raincoat, which was already useless as a raincoat, so no hard feelings! However, because Star Brite Fabric Protectant has such a strong odor, and doesn't seem to make fabrics waterproof or water repellant, I rate it at a possibly generous 3 stars ("It's okay" on the official Amazon scale).

Excellent waterproofing spray, but strong chemical residual scent takes a long time to dissipate
My favorite rain jacket lost its waterproof quality after too many washes. It wasn't even water resistant any more. But it's my favorite, so I looked around for a waterproofing spray. When I saw the price on this Star brite product, I decided I would buy a new rain jacket instead of trying to revive the old one. But I couldn't find anything I liked as well, so I decided to give this a try. I followed the directions faithfully. Made sure the jacket was clean and dry. Sprayed outside on a sunny day. Left the jacket outside for a few days to allow the smell to dissipate. Brought the jacket in after about 3 days outside on the clothesline because rain was forecast. When the rain came, I put on the jacket, was a little put off by the remaining scent (smells like an insecticide), and went outside. The rain was coming down hard, but the waterproofing kept me completely dry. So, I am 5 stars pleased with the ability of this Star brite spray to make my old rain jacket like new. But I'm taking off a star due to the residual smell. It's now been 3 weeks since I applied the waterproofing spray and the scent is still identifiable. Not as strong as it was, but unpleasant enough that I won't wear the jacket for anything except outside chores on the property. That's what I wore the jacket for before, so nothing lost. But if I had used this on a dressier rain coat I would have been very disappointed. Still, the waterproofing is excellent.
