Son loves it
My son loves this fire house but it took a bit to put together. If you are familiar with IKEA building process then you can handle this. The pieces actually have number stickers on them which is a huge help. Once together feels very sturdy. Wish the back was heavier construction but it is just like every other furniture you put together yourself - it holds the bookshelf together and sliding into grooves is a plus making it sturdy. Much better than nailing it on back. All screws have pre-drilled holes and are color coordinated in red and white and I have never worked with that detail. My son loves the corner that opens up and the bell on top. Instead of using it as a bookshelf my son uses this as a fire station. We wanted a bigger house than what they offered but if you get their fire house you have the benefit of having the furniture. His fire men (not included) pretend to climb the painted ladder on the outside and slide down the pole mounted on the corner. It is up against the one wall but that makes it safer for little fingers. KidKraft will not sell the furniture separately. I was worried about stability of any bookshelf combined with a kid and wanted to secure the top to the wall. Called customer service and they sent the pieces out immediately via Fed Ex Ground. Great to work with. Later discovered a wall mount had been included in the box just in a separate bag. I thought it somehow related to the bell but went back to directions and bell is only attached via a gold string. Who knows how long that will last with a little boy but string is kinda thick so we shall see. Would I buy it again? Most definitely if you need larger size. Otherwise would recommend the smaller fire station with all its accessories which is a great price. Kidkraft appears to have wonderful quality.

After replacing the original, here’s what we’ve noticed...
UPDATE: July 31st 2018We received a replacement product and have put it together. This one did have all the properi drill holes but we still felt disappointed overall. Even when fully assembled, it didn’t feel very secure. We anchored it to the wall in hopes of helping that issue but found that the designated point to secure it on the shelf was in the flimsy boards of the back instead of a stronger, thicker point in the product. We opted to drill a hole through a stronger point to secure it better. We attempted to use the screws provided for the door lock again and was able to cause less damage this time but it still noticably pushed the board up where the screws went into. Overall, it’s a cheap plywood shelf with really cute painting on it. My son is thrilled now that it’s up but I know this thing won’t last him that long. Luckily he’s our last child so there’s no concern of passing it on. It should serve it’s purpose till he gets too cool for it.ORIGINAL POSTBought this as my son’s 3rd birthday gift and he was so excited to “help” put it together. Cute product but it was missing drill holes to connect a major stability point, the screws for the latch are inappropriate to the task and caused damage, and the bottom slat was black instead of silver as pictured. It really is cute so we pushed on and tried to compensate for the flaws but without the drill holes, it couldn’t be completed to a sturdy and safe enough state for a toddler. Of course my son had his firetrucks lined up and ready for the shelf so he went to tears as I repackaged the item for return. Hoping the next one comes with all the drill holes and now we know to avoid the provided screws for the latch. Though now my son has to wait another week for his gift and we can only hope this ones right. Definitely not letting him know it’s in or let him watch me put this one together. Don’t want to get his hopes back up. Will update once we get our replacement.

Even better than anticipated!
Even better than anticipated!I was excited to find this bookcase for our Kindergartener, who loves his fire-rescue vehicles and books about fire-rescue everything. The bookcase itself seems sturdy enough after assembly and has several nifty features, including cutout windows, a garage door that opens, and a real bell. The finish is smooth and the screws are red, black, and gray to match the paint in their intended locations.Assembly was not awful, even for the spatially challenged. We only had one error that required unscrewing and re-attaching. The directions are all in images. The one thing that would have helped would have been an image of the completed book shelf on the instructions or box. If you need to turn maps to face the same way you are going (like I do), do yourself a favor and have this image open when you assemble.Currently, our firefighter-in-training is using his bookcase mostly as a fire house for imaginary play. It fits many vehicles and accessories with ease. I expect it will transition well into bookcase use as needed.Overall, the grownups are satisfied, the cats are curious about potential new sleeping perches, and the little guy is ecstatic. Win-win-win!
