great reel
Ordered the 1500. I use 10# braid because I fish a lot of tanks/ponds and never know when you will get a big one on. I ordered this version because I like the drag on the rear of the reel. I also ordered a handle with one knob to put on. I paired this with a 6' Cabela's Med Light fast action rod. This has been a good combination for me for my use. Sensitive enough for the smaller fish and tough enough for the bigger fish. The reel has performed great. With the braid it casts a mile. I like the quick cast trigger and is the main reason I purchased this reel. Some people don't like the back pedal of the handle before it stops. I don't have a problem with it. it is designed to have the quick fire trigger stop at the top of the reel for casting. This is a nice feature to be able to use 1 finger to cast. I never lost any fish because of the back pedal.

Extremely disappointed
This was my first Shimano reel and I must say I am really disappointed in the quality. The reel functioned decently for the first 6 outings then it started having major issues. Even before the issues there were some disappointing features:1. The spool does not lock as it turns except in one small area. The result being that when you get a hit you can miss the fish because the spool had to turn a full rotation backwards to lock.2. There is a large bail catch which the line frequently gets caught on when casting, usually once lure makes water contact. Doesnt always happen but happens enough that it is worth mentioning.3. The drag mechanism appears to have issues after a few snags.4. Did not like the handle, 2 handles for line to get caught on, or to catch your coat, or etc.

Pricey but works well.
I used this reel to pair my UL rod with 2 lb trout line. The rig is slaying sunnies and crappies this spring at highly pressured fishing piers. One thing I like the reel especially is its quick fire system: you can cast using just one hand. I would say once I got used to the system, casting with two hands seems a bit cumbersome... The reel is awesome, but it would be perfect if it gets cheaper.

Best spinning reel!
Hands down the best spinning reel I've used. Super smooth operation, really fast retrieve. Sure, it's more expensive than many other brands, but I like it so much I picked up a 2nd, from Amazon, of course. Then, a 3rd one for a buddy. Love the one-hand function with the trigger.

Purchased this reel (4000) because I have always liked the QuickFire II system and have always been a Shimano spinning reel user. Out of the packaging this reel did not meet my expectations, this reel made a distinct grinding sound/vibration at one specific point in the rotation. I am going to attempt to take it apart and see if there is something wrong internally that can be easily remedied. This grinding makes the reel unsuitable for touch/feel fishing situations like jigging, it is fine if you are using a bobber and worms I guess. I have a smaller version of this reel and it is outstanding, so maybe I just got a dud. Unfortunately it is way past the return date.

Did NOT like this reel!
This real was one of the worst Shimano reals I've used. Felt like I had so much resistance reeling that my wrist and arm got tired. Definitely NOT as good as the older Spirex reels. BAD.

SUPER REEL
These reels are getting harder to find. Not sure if Shimano will continue the rear drag or not but I hope so. I was happy to find these on here as they are the wife's favorite and you know women, once the set their mind on something. Have a gpod supply now and by the time she needs new ones, we'll see what else is out there.

Good reel
Very good, solid and inexpensive but if you have a few extra bucks to spend buy Shimano Stradic GTM instead. I own both and the difference is like Toyota and Lamborghini.

Quality Shimano Product
These are exactly as advertised. Came fast and in good condition. Shimano reels are excellent quality and the Spirex series is a mid-level reel with great options. Buy them fast as I'm not sure they are being made anymore and they are one of the very few Quickfire II trigger models you can still buy that allows one handed casting!

Super reel, very smooth.
I won't anything else other than Shimano reels for the casting trigger and amazing drag control at the back of the reel coupled with the drag lever. You will be hard pressed to find a better reel. Super high quality.
