how does each light (main and reading) work without the remote?

They don’t work well without the remote. Switch doesn’t have the options the remote has. Found it hard to turn on the light I wanted.

If I have it pluged into a switch-activated outlet, will it turn on/off with the switch? (without needing to use remote or buttons on the lamp)?

I have mine plugged into a smart switch that is plugged into a wall outlet. I activate through voice commands with my echo device. I don't have a wall switch activated plug in my house to test your situation, but a switch is a switch. If the outlet I have this light plugged into were activated by a wall switch instead it would still turn on the light. If we ever turn the light off by the remote control or by the button on the light pole, then it will not turn on with the voice command. . .you have to turn it on with the switch on the pole or the remote the FIRST time and then ALWAYS use the wall switch to control it after that. This is per my husband, an electrician. Hope that helps.

is it an LED integrated lamp or the "bulbs" can be replaced?

This is an LED lamp. There are no bulbs to replace.

not sure. The ones that I have are black
