Geared for a Travelling Exhibition
The best feature of this book is the collection of Tagore's paintings taken directly from an exhibition currently being shown in major world cities. In that sense it's an excellent souvenir for remembering what one has actually seen or could have seen. The text however is disappointing. It's a series of essays by different authors written on the occasion of Tagore's 150th birthday and is accordingly filled with congratulation and praise befitting a celebration. Each essay is independent of the rest, resulting in lots of repetition for the reader to wade through. Those seeking a deeper understanding of Tagore would do well to get "Rabindranath Tagore: The Myriad-Minded Man" by Dutta and Robinson. Unlike "The Last Harvest", Dutta and Robinson's book is an in-depth biography about a complex and troubled man who was nevertheless able to offer the West an exposure to Indian history and thinking.I'd say, if you'd like very well-done images from the Last Harvest exhibition, this is the book to buy. If you're after a deeper understanding of the artist, poet, author, playwright, and educator, get the Dutta and Robinson book.
