Quite a sharp lens, shame about the plastic mount
I've had a love/hate relationship with this lens for a while. Overall optics wise for a "super kit lens" (ie an upgrade over an 18-55mm kit) it's a pretty solid choice, but with a few issues that take the shine off a bit.Firstly the range is very good on an APS-C camera giving you a 27-157mm equivalent which is very useful for what folks call a "walkabout" lens (I call general purpose myself)Using this for a few years I've rounded up a list of areas that stood out to me good/bad:What I like:+ It's pretty sharp, sharper than you might expect for the price. At the 18mm end it's not bad even wide open and stopped down a bit very decent across the frame. Moving up the zoom range it's still quite usuable across the entire range wide open up to the 105mm end, but some drop off on the edges at 105mm (but not bad though). You won't feel that you have to stop down for "normal subjects" ie people shots.+ The range is very useful for a single lens trip out, covering the wide end up to a mid telephoto..as expected it's not fast but that is par for the course.+ VR works well as you expect this isn't a lens for low light shooting, but if you are caught out a bit in dimmer light the VR will be very useful to you and is quite effective (I would say around 3 stops but this varies on the user)+ Build on the lens body is kit lens ish, well a small step up from that. But you would expect a bit better if bought at the stand alone asking price. Plastic focus ring feels a bit cheap, and the tolerances are only so so.Not so good:- That cheap plastic mount. It's basically the fatal flaw of the lens and I've had around 3 of these and take great care with my equipment but one careless drop of your camera bag and you'll be hunting on ebay for a new mount. It is true that you expect a plastic mount on a kit lens, but Nikon's plastic feels and is more fragile than other makers (ie thinner plastic) At 420g it's almost twice the weight of the 18-55mm VR, and it's a larger lens in width too.- As expected with any super zoom lens there are compromises, CA an issue at times, distortion is stronger with these lenses at both ends (quite strong barrel distortion wide end, and notable pincushion grows as you move up the range). Falloff again more obvious than shorter range lenses. None of these are huge issues on their own and tend to come with this type of lens.- Hood rattles when attached. Very minor point but it just feels like a few corners were cut, and they let the guy who "measures things properly" take a tea break! It can be a bit annoying at times and a sign of corner cutting from Nikon.- Background blur/bokeh is so so, not the worst I've seen but could have been better here. Likely not a major problem for this type of lens few are that good at it anyway. Bit on the edgy side v the Sony equivalent I recently usedOverall it's a lens that is both useful in it's range and quite sharp, but that plastic mount..well the lens just deserves better and Nikon cut some corners here. With a metal mount this is an easy 4 star lens. Nice range, sharp, decent VR a decent step up from an 18-55mm VR if you want the top end range.Worth a look in a "kit bundle" (but pay attention to the price) Best deals are found on kit bundles. As a stand alone lens the plastic mount, well it's not pricey, but you would expect better and a metal mount for the full retail price. Struggles a bit on 24mp sensors, but a good copy is OK up to 16mp. If you have a larger budget, then the 18-140mm is the next step up in both build and optics. Though as with all lenses in the super zoom category there are some compromises.
