The Emerald Night is something of a landmark for the LEGO train series. It features detail never thought of before, authenticity that is un-rivalled even to the point that special wheels were developed just for this model. Whats more, its quite beautiful and I would suggest makes ant other LEGO train look almost out of place beside it. Almost!What a pity it is that the carriage included with this model isn't available to buy seperately, for it brings a certain aura of class to your set-up. Building the model wasn't difficult at all, and as with any LEGO train, it was impressive to witness how layer by layer the product has been designed. There really is nothing quite like it in the LEGO City!The only issue with this product is that it has been designed purely for use with 'Power Functions' if you want it motorised. Traditionally, other LEGO locomotives have had the option of installing a 9V motor (now discontinued) since there is still such a large fan-base for this system, but LEGO seem keen to phase it out. It is possible to install a 9V motor, but it is not outlined in the instructions and requires re-designing the base of the Tender.To add to this, if you do decide to install a Power Functions motor, you have remove the Cabin details such as the fire pit, which renders installing them unnessecary in the first place unless you build the model as a static object. Wouldn't that be a waste?The Emerald Night has already doubled in price since I first bought it, so I can only suggest that if you love LEGO trains, there is no time like the present to get it. Typically, the discontinued products go up even more in price and you'll likely never get your hands on one. I would suggest that no LEGO fans train set is complete without this wonderful product, and will surely be a classic in years to come.

Not much to say really. It is a beautiful train. It is easy to make. The only downside is it doesn't come with any track and it needs track to run because otherwise the front and rear bogies on the locomotive will be all over the place. But then it is a train, not a car. Track seems hard to find and not cheap so I'm going to purchase a Lego train set with comes with lots of track and points. That way I get track and more rolling stock. Even without the track however this locomotive is a thing of beauty.

I waited and waited for Amazon to sell this direct, rather than through Merchants, but in the end went to Lego Shop. Guess what? Almost half the price and no supply problems. It is sad to say that I previously highlighted this Merchant Rip-off on two occasions, but Amazon have failed to respond. I can only conclude that these 'so called' Merchants are taking your order and just buying from Lego Shop, with a £30-£40 markup. It is an absolutely superb model and quite a challenge for my 7-year old. If you consider there are 300 more pieces for £10 less than the latest Hogwarts Express, it really is a remarkable buy. Just watch who you buy it from!

This is a really well designed set with lots of details. It works smoothly when motorized with power functions and it runs much faster than the old lego trains. I would suggest the rechargeable battery box here instead of the new battery box shipped with the cargo train.

This is a great addition for all lego city collectors but do be warned, this item is less than half this selling price if you go directly to the lego website....and it is in stock!
