SEAWHITE Black Cloth Hardback Artists Sketchbook 140gsm Square 140x140mm

Seawhite of Brighton make beautiful casebound sketchbooks, but they do not sell direct to the general public. Therefore this seller is proving a valuable source of them for people who would otherwise have purchased them in person from one of the art school shops, pre Covid. The 140 x 140 size is a special favourite of mine as it is a perfect size to hold in the hand, and as it has stitched pages, working across adjacent pages is easy. The heavy cartridge paper is sized to cope with most media. The book also expands nicely to cope with anything collaged into it. The service from this seller was faultless, but the price was quite a lot more than I normally pay when making personal purchases from my local art collage shop. However, having a couple of these books available for the summer, is worth the extra cost in the present circumstances.

Paper seems pretty thick and takes the ink well, however, if you decide to use markers or thicker pens, they bleed through the page. Some even bled through onto the following page. Quite a lot of pages, perfect for ink drawings or pencil, but would be careful with any water based paint. The cover is quite strong and seems durable from initial inspection. When you open up the sketchbook, it lays flat, so both pages can be used as a spread, which works well for larger drawings (good spine). Not the best sketchbook I've had, but great value for the price.

Great value for money. I use it for ink and wash sketches, and it is able to take a moderate amount of watercolour washes on both sides of paper. Great for fountain pen as well and does not feather. The 140x140 one is great for travelling with and I love the square size. Pages open flat so you can paint / sketch across the page if you like.

Am a big Seawhite fan. The paper quality is wonderful and it accepts wet media too, within reason. The book is well made and robust. I prefer hard bound books and they store very neatly. I love these sketchbooks and have a few different sizes for various projects. Can only recommend.
