NOPE. Not magnetic. But it's easy to use E6000 craft glue to glue your own magnets on. Both the glue and magnets are available here on Amazon.

Is it small enough for common needles?

I use small tapestry needles and it works fine, if thr needle has a really small eye, it will not wirk.
