Could you put sand in this and use it as a fluidized bed filter?

I do. I put filter floss under the sponges to prevent sand from falling to the bottom. Used pool filtration sand and branched off from my primary pump with a valve to adjust water flow. I don't use the included pump but I don't see why you cant. Works great for me!

Is the pump that it comes with a submersible or not

I'm confused how any pump that's not submerged would even work? That's kind of the point of the pump, to be submerged in water so that it pumps into the media...

What are the exact internal diameter of the hoses?

From what I can measure, its 7/16 in. inner diameter and 1/2 in. outer diameter

What size tubing I can use for the aquatop Mr 20 to replace the clear tubing that came with it with a black tube ?
