Is the handle only for those who had large hands?

YES I'm 6'4" and 270 pounds and the handle is very oversized even with my XX large hands. I would prefer a much thinner handle. The handle diameter is much larger then any baseball bat. The quality of this product is excellent but a thinner handle would allow for a faster swing.

I want this for protection but wonder if it’s grip is too large for smaller but adult female hands?

Be careful about indicating you want to use this item for protection since it may not be legal to own it for that purpose, but to answer your inquiry I believe that the handle and strap would accommodate a smaller hand. It's very grippable. Hope this helped
