GREAT VALUE HALF THE PRICE OF THE ENGLISH VERSION
Great value the full three seasons on 11 discs, I don't know much about the music as I didn't watch the original series. I know the region 2 version is a lot dearer very expensive for music for the same episodes, all I know it is like I said great value and is half the price as our box sets, I have never heard of people who can watch a programme and listen to music at the same time, if I listen to music I put my cd player on and if I watch a programme I play my DVDs, this programme is based on history and true events of what happened in real life. I know one can't act according to real life events but one can get the general idea how hard it was for the real soldiers, I can recommend this box set to anyone and the value of it no one can ask for more,The benefits to this set are it is a lot cheaper then the U.K version and come safely packed in a plastic case, it as every episode from series 1-3 made and very good quality and sound, the disadvantages of this set is it doesn't have the original soundtrack, the DVDs are piled on top of one another not separately and you need a region 1 or multi region dvd player. I give this five star not because it doesn't have disadvantages but what can one expect for the price? If you want gold for penny's this set is just that all the original series accept the music for pennies, I don't know about others but I separate what I watch to what I listen to. Music doesn't make a good series may help but good acting is what makes a good series or film, as for music a good cd player does that. It is really a good bargain.

This worked with region 2 player
Loved revisiting a favourite show from my youth. More importantly, this plays on a region 2 player… which isn’t mentioned in the product details.

Watched the first DVD only thus far - it's like having an old friend round for a cuppa
Watched the first DVD only thus far - it's like having an old friend round for a cuppa!! Never forgot how poignant the series was/is, in any war/conflict people die and get maimed and Tour of Duty never hid from that fact but it still seems to humanise the Vietnam war and not just in a pro American manner. It focused on the camaraderie of the soldiers of Bravo company, but it's use of one-off characters was equally well used, in the telling of each story. As I recall the series seemed to loose its impetus especially in the third season, but it never lost it's ability to show the Vietnam conflict in a gritty and real manner and what it did excel at was the way it portrayed the effect of the war on the people who fought it, or those closest to them.On a negative note the production has not been changed in any way, I remember as an insomniac teenager thinking was the 'ropey' sound track due to being over tired or was the post production really that bad. Series aired early hours of a Tuesday morning if I remember correctly. On a huge positive note, this does have the original musical soundtrack intact, as well as the haunting incidental music, haven't watched any episodes without the original music but feel the show would lose hugely without it somehow.Having the entire series at the push of a button sounds great, but even after the first of the DVD's I can tell this is a box set best not to be binged upon, you can if you want, but there's too many sentiments and messages being communicated and it is best to digest each episode slowly. As the one thing the show even 20-30 years on, does, is make you think about what you're watching, rather than just be an easy on the brain instantly forgettable experience.

A gem from the past
My husband is so pleased with this box set as he loved watching the series many years ago. It was the best price I could find. I was a little worried it wouldn't play on my dvd player as it's an old one and Region 1 dvds haven't played on it in the past, but I need worry not! They play fine. Great service as usual!

Very worthwhile series........ in a cheap and nasty box.
Yes, indeed, a great series. This was a waiting-for-"China Beach" purchase. Something with which i was totally unfamiliar. Having grown up in the sixties, i can recollect the news reports of the period very vaguely. The seemingly eternal Vietnam War and its ghastliness, with the west's typical viewpoint of a "good guys versus bad guys" intervention....... of "zapping the Cong". (The communist threat did seem, to be fair, very distinctly real back then.) There was the constant referencing of body counts and kill ratios, as though the Vietnamese were completely insignificant. Some things just never change. This series gives us genuine insight into just what it might have been like to have fought in this war. It goes as far as it can, for an eighties tv series, in depicting the kinds of awful things which happened. To its great credit, it doesn't attempt to be revisionist in its presentation. This product represents the best way of buying all three seasons which, individually, aren't especially cheap. The first and third seasons are particularly good. The second drifts down a soapier route, with peripheral storylines, but remains entirely acceptable. This edition apparently restores the original music to the series..... although i do wonder if it's all there. (One volume talks about the soundtrack including the Velvet Underground...... and i do not recall any such thing. Even as source music.)Each season features a bonus "behind-the-scenes" look back at the making of the series, with most of the main cast members being interviewed. (Stephen Caffrey is, curiously, the notable exception.) The negative features, which move me to deduct a star, are the well-documented picture quality and the horribly cheap box. A real "cost optimisation" exercise, if ever i saw one. Nothing of the collector's edition about it and easily damaged upon opening. It basically serves to hold the three volumes together. The series, however, is excellent and the price just about acceptable.
