Can you use this as an external drive using a sata 3 cable?

you can in theory, but I would not advice it. This model require a lot of electric power which a single USB 2 outlet of a sata cable may or may not just about to provide. There are usb cables 2 with two usb outlets which can provide more power . USB 3 cable can provide more power, but not sure if it is enough for this model. If you can find a SATA cable with two USB 3 out letss then you bhave a better chance

Does it have 3 years warranty ? Can they be registered on WD website ?

Yes they can, however, I had 2 sent that WD said were form disks, one I gave up on having swapped out. WD will tell you when you register the disks if there is an issue. It was Amazon that supplied the wrong disks to me twice, not a reseller
