of course. This coating thickness tester will easily detect the putty. Ie recovered or repair parts of the car you will easily find out.

Q: is it better than paint spy ?

The paint spy is similar in design and purpose. I own the VVV - group thickness meter and it works fine. If there’s a big difference in price I’d get the least expensive one. Remember though, these work on metal body parts and not fiberglass or composite materials. I tested the hood on an 09 Prius and got no reading because it’s a composite type material and not metal.

Q: Would this product detect if the entire panel was replaced by an auto body shop? Isn't that a more common occurrence?

The paint thickness would be different from auto body painting and original factory painting. If you find significant variances or variance with one fender from rest of car then that fender was replaced. Paint thickness will probable vary within the body shop painted fender as well. Go with the gauge and use it on your own car to get a feeling for it.
