Great Hat For Working Outside. Picking Up Chicks? Not So Much....
I am a landscape supervisor that works in the deep south doing heavy duty commercial landscaping 5 days a week. I was looking for the best summer hat that there was. I mean the best. My Australian style hat with a mesh crown just was too tight feeling on my head and really didn't allow a good breeze under the hat even tho it's mesh. I came to Amazon to buy a straw style Coolie hat and found this and had to give it a try. I am in LOVE with this hat. The small mesh skull cap holds the hat on without feeling so constricting. The breeze just sails under this hat and you can really feel it. The material must be some type of weather resistant material because the water just beads up and rolls off. It's like having an umbrella with you as far as the rain goes. With my Australian hat, it would become water logged after just a light rain. With the Australian, after just a few days of work the front of it became brown and stained from touching the hat with dirty hands or gloves. I've had my Coolie hat for several weeks and it doesn't even appear to be dirty at all unless you really look closely at it. It still hasn't begun to smell bad or anything. I'll post an update after I wash it to let everyone know how it holds up to that. The only problem I could mention is that in a strong wind the hat flies all over the place. The neck loop usually holds it in place quite well up to say about 15 mph wind. After that it becomes like a parachute and will really grab the wind and start flying around. Usually that's no big deal tho, because if it's that windy you don't much need the hat anyway. I've had several people stop me and say "I like your hat!" I almost always tell them to stop fibbing and say what they mean! The hat is ugly! It will not win you any fashion contests and you won't be able to pick up any chicks in this hat. Fact-O-Bizness. That said, when it's 98 degrees and you're out working in a ditch, that shouldn't be a major concern at that moment anyway. This is a great hat, but how about some more colors??

Rain or shine, you're covered! Literally.
Needed a new hat for hiking and also a trip to Hawaii. I looked at traditional bamboo cone hats because the Asian in me wanted to channel my inner rice farmer, but I realized that kind of hat would be hard to transport considering that they are stiff. Saw this item in related items list and looked up other reviews. Yes, it's a bit expensive for what's basically a foam cone wrapped in nylon fabric, but it works even better than I imagined. It's wide enough to cover your face, neck, and most/all of your shoulders from the sun directly above. The fabric is very water resistant, enough to handle significant rain and act as a personal umbrella as I discovered in Hawaii. It's very lightweight and folds up easy for packing away. There is an inner mesh hairnet with adjustable band to securely fit most size heads, and has a chin strap to help keep the hat in place. The material feels very durable, and I expect it to last many years.Other than the price, the only other concern is that strong winds can blow under the hat and knock it out of place despite the chinstrap.

One of the best functional hats for hard work in the sun.
This is the funniest hat you can possibly wear in public. Especially if you are not Asian. It's more subtle than say... a giant banana on your head but still manages to foster laughter from your coworkers. Still as the day went on and things got hotter and hotter; all those laughs turned to "That hat is actually pretty good, where did you get it again?"This is one of the best hats for keeping your full face and back of the neck protected from the sun. It also has an adjustable head harness inside to make it place perfectly and comfortably. You cannot get it wet, but for a hard days work or hiking, you can't beat it. About half of my coworkers are now wearing this hat, the others have to deal with skin cancer.Love this hat. At first I thought it was too pricey, but it really paid for itself.

Weird is the new black, great surprisingly adjustable hat, just hard to pack/doesn't fold w/o creasing
Super fun hat, looks a bit silly but "weird" is the new black so it went over big with the rafting & hiking crowd in Colorado. Sheds water very well, sticks out far enough to give surprisingly good shade, but not so far that it hits stuff. You can wear a kayaking vest and drink coffee without knocking into it. The inside is kind of neat: it has an adjustable mess inner "hat" that's adjustable with a snap back, just like a baseball cap. Keeps it on your head. My only disappointment was that it's made of a sort of foam that doesn't flex enough. Like packing peanuts type foam, only in a solid cone. It's hard to pack if you're taking it on a trip, once you fold it or jam it someplace (it's not soft enough to really smush into a backback) it doesn't pop back into a perfect cone shape. It gets a bend or crease.

Well made, quirky hat.
Package: came folded in half in an envelope, so it has a permanent crease. I opened it up and set it on a table. I'm hoping that, eventually, the crease will go away. Honestly, I don't see that they can ship it any other way than they do. Maybe fold it along the other axis, so the crease runs ear to ear...? Then it won't look like a nuns' habit, while I'm waiting for the crease to go away.Construction: it looks well-made and it fits well. My friends passed it around. It's adjustable, it fits all our heads and looks the same on everyone. I like the mesh headband. When the wind blows, air blows between the hat and my head. It was a nice effect. The hat feels durable and I think it will last.I think the hat is a decent size. From the perspective of keeping the sun off my face or out of my eyes, I think this works better than my ball cap or boonie hat. I'm interested in how it will work in the rain....Overall, I think the hat is well made but I'm not not sure I like it as much as I want to. It's quirky and it looks like it will last forever. From the perspective of quality, I'm happy but I can see why everyone doesn't own one of these hats.I think it will keep the sun off my neck while kayaking but I think it wil bump against my pack while hiking.

All Function
I purchased this item in red as a kayaking hat as it would provide me decent sun protection. Unfortunately I had to return it as my partner pointed out that I would look like a lamp on the water wearing a red PFD in a red kayak. If he didn’t laugh every time he saw the hat I would have kept it. The item still deserves 5 stars as it delivers on its intended purpose.

Best sun/rain hat for those with BAHA implant
We bought this to replace my daughter's school hat (part of school uniform in Australia) because it did not interfere with her BAHA implant. We love that it functions as both a breathable sun hat AND rain hat (that protects her BAHA sound processor to boot). We almost gave up finding a proper hat for her—online, people with BAHA implants have essentially given up on wearing hats and have been recommending the use of umbrellas, which is useless for my daughter because she's not allowed outside in the sun to play unless she's wearing her hat and she can't play holding an umbrella.I'm actually thinking of buying one for myself, as it is essentially two hats—breathable sun hat and rain hat—in one.
