A Nifty Little Fishing Tool for the Trail
I recently got my hands on the Ka-Bar Backpacker Caster Lightweight Fishing System (9921, Black, Original Version), and I’ve got to say, it’s a clever piece of gear for anyone who loves fishing but wants to keep their pack light. This thing is designed for backpackers, survivalists, or anyone who might want to toss a line in the water without lugging a full rod and reel. Why It’s Cool: First off, this thing is tiny and weighs just 0.25 lbs, so it barely takes up space in your backpack or survival kit. It’s made from Ultramid, a tough plastic that feels sturdy and can take a beating—perfect for rugged outdoor use. The handle, inspired by Ka-Bar’s iconic USMC knife, has a hollow compartment that’s great for storing hooks, weights, swivels, or even small survival goodies like matches or a mini ferro rod. It holds 100 yards of 8lb line or 90 yards of 10lb line, which is plenty for catching small to medium fish in streams or ponds. The included clamp keeps your line secure when you’re not fishing, so no tangled messes. I took it to a local creek, and after a bit of practice, I was casting about 20-25 yards with a small lure. It’s not going to win any long-distance casting contests, but it’s effective for tight spots like small rivers or lakes.

Must-Have for Any Survival Gear Angler!
I purchased this Ka-Bar Backpacker Caster fishing device to put in my sailboat survival emergency waterproof ditch bag. However, I used the fishing device several times before stowing it away with my other survival gear. It is based upon using the product, and I believe it is a game-changer for lightweight fishing enthusiasts! This compact, durable hand reel is perfect for backpacking, survival situations, or just a quick fishing trip without the bulk of a traditional rod and reel.Pros:✅ Ultra-Lightweight & Portable—Weighing almost nothing, it easily fits in your backpack or pocket. It is perfect for minimalist anglers and survivalists.✅ Durable Construction—It is made from high-quality, impact-resistant materials that can handle rugged outdoor conditions.✅ Easy to Use—Whether you’re a seasoned fisherman or a beginner, casting and retrieving with this are simple and effective.✅ Versatile—It is great for freshwater and light saltwater fishing, making it a reliable tool for various environments.✅ Tangle-Free Design—Unlike traditional fishing setups, this one is straightforward and poses minimal risk of frustrating tangles.I was honestly surprised by how well this little device performed. If you’re looking for a lightweight, no-fuss fishing solution, the Ka-Bar Backpacker Caster is an excellent investment. It is highly recommended for adventurers, survivalists, and anyone who loves simple, effective fishing gear!

Good product manufacturer wise.
I’m giving 4 stars because it’s still a cool and sturdy, handy piece to have but regarding the shape we received it in (especially since we purchased this as brand new) we were a bit disappointed. I opened the smudged package and the handle had stuff all over it like some sludgy stuff and a little cob webbing on the handle. The inside of it for storing stuff is totally filthy and has a wormy looking thing and crusty stuff all at the bottom but the gear itself seems strong so we’re keeping it. Plus we just don’t feel like dealing with the hassle of returning it and buying a different one which is probably what the seller was hoping we would do when they sent a messy, used item. Keeping it for functionality but the seller experience was none too thrilling to say the least.

Great Piece of gear ! wont rot, crack or rust..floats and will catch fish.
I found this while browsing the Ka-Bar website the other day. I have been eye balling some wood hobo reel designs for a while and am familiar with the classic design as many are Im sure. The nice thing with this is it wont crack and split like wood when exposed to moisture and heat, it is made of a VERY tough material. This is a solid little backup fishing system with little to go wrong. It is very dense and can take some abuse.... but still floats. As a kid my friends and I used to make something very similar out of scrounged items at the local fishing waters using soda bottles, tin cans, or sticks. We would catch some bugs and spent many summer days picking bluegill, bass, crappie, perch, and even a few catfish out of the lakes and ponds within bicycle range.... good times ! On my first trip out I did not catch any monster fish but I did have a blast and it brought back all those summer time memories of my youth! I am considering a personal challenge to see how big of a fish I can land on this thing just to spice up my fishing trips. If you are not familiar with this type of fishing it can be a little fussy, and you must keep in mind that without a pole it is VERY easy for the fish to break your line. Reeling, or winding in the line takes a little practice to keep from tangling up your line when you hook a fish. I have posted a video on Youtube of my first trip out with this showing a little of how it works and what to expect. Zeuki1 is my channel, Backpack Kaster field test. And keep in mind what direction the line winds on the top if you are going after large fish with heavy line or you may ( unlikely but could happen) end up having a large fish unscrew the top of the reel if your not careful. Some Specs.Mine weighs in at 4.2 oz with the line clip or 3.7oz without and this includes 50yds of 10lb spiderwire braided line. This is a good thing to keep in mind if you plan on storing this away in a bug out bag or survival pack, braided line will not coil and bunch up over time like mono filament will.Length is 6 1/4" long and just under 2" at the widest point. The inner compartment is about 4 1/2" deep and tapered down from 1" to maybe 1/2" at the bottom. There is a rubber O ring to seal the compartment. There is enough room for a decent emergency fishing kit, everthing in the picture I show fits with a little room to spare.Take care and tight lines !
