My Dahlquist DQM-5 Speakers are like NEW!
My Dahlquist DQM-5 speakers which I bought back in 1983 were suffering from extreme foam edge deterioration on the woofers. I was faced with either sending them back to Dahlquist (over $175 each including shipping), getting rid of them or just let them stay the way they were. Even in that state, they didn't sound that bad, except for the lack of decent bass. I listen to a lot of jazz and classical and the warm rich sound of these speakers make them ideal for this music. The new speakers, especially the new 5:1 home theater speaker systems while having a full tone, come off on the cold side.I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that for a fraction of the cost, I could replace the foam around the woofer myself. I figured it was worth the time to try it and I was glad I did. The kit came with everything I needed, and a complete set of instructions. The manufacturer also had great videos on their Web site, so I was well prepared. The only thing which was not accurate was the time it would take to do the repair. (Okay, they did say on average a half an hour, but it actually took more than two per speaker. Still giving them 5 stars though.) One of the reasons it took longer was getting the remaining foam off of the frame and speaker cone took longer, plus the speakers wires were soldered in so I was not able to completely remove them from the cabinet. One of the great things about this particular product is that there was no need to remove the speaker cone cap at the center in order to shim the cone. This speeded up the process. I did the work over two nights (one speaker per night). The result is that the speakers again sound as great as the day I got them, at a significant savings over repair or replacement. If you are handy at doing repairs and have the patience, this is the way to go, especially if you have already have a great pair of speakers like I do.
