I haven't play those games.. But Ubongo is quite a nice, very light, game. I find it very amusing to play when you want a fast and fun game. I do recomend.

Are the pieces paper or plastic?

They are paper/cardboard. A great game, don't let the age recommendation fool you. 4 of us adults had trouble completing the puzzles on the easiest gaming side. Lots of fun!

Could a younger child play this game, or is 8yrs old the earliest? I have a precocious 5yr old who loves games like Set, Blokus, Uno etc. Thanks!

A younger child could definitely play the game. The age limit probably refers to frustration tolerance - some of the shapes are hard to create. But a kid who is good at spatial reasoning will enjoy the game. We had a great time playing with our kids (10 and 11).
