where can i buy the filter for this unit?

The Panasonic site https://na.panasonic.com/us/home-and-building-solutions/ventilation-indoor-air-quality/ventilation-fans/whisperfresh-selecttm says that the WhisperFresh Select™ is HVI certified for use with MERV 8 (FL0815NL1) and MERV 13 (FV-FL1315NL1 filters. Merve 8 filter is included. I have not yet replaced my filter, so suggest you contact Panasonic for details.

Does this have a damper that closes automatically when the unit is off?

Yes, the FV-15NLFS1 features a gravity damper. The weight of the damper brings it back to a closed position when the unit is off.
