Safety first!
I had a fall in recent ice storm with minor injury. I hope to avoid those in the future.

They work
The claws are designed to fit the ball of the foot, at least that is my assumption. They are held in place by two straps, one is Velcro which holds the claw in place across the top of the foot. The other strap is a fairly strong elastic band that hooks around the heel of the foot. This elastic band try’s to pull the claw toward the back of the foo. The rear strap is probably there to prevent the claw from sliding off the front of the foot. I think there should be some method to keep the claw from sliding rearward. You can tighten the Velcro strap really tight, but that become uncomfortable.Overall they do work, I live in Minnesota and have worn them a number of times this winter when clearing snow; I haven’t slipped, so they certainly work.

Works well... with one modification
I tried putting the grippers on as they were designed, but I couldn't get them secure enough to prevent them from coming loose and falling off. After I cut off the useless back strap they fit securely and worked perfectly.

Stays in place.
The backstrap does a good job holding these in place.

Not safe for all users.
When using, the cleats tend to migrate to the arch of the foot, and therefore are nearly hidden by the heel. If you can bend your foot, which I cannot, you can place your foot down so the cleats hit the ground. They do grip if the hit ice. The real issue is that the toe and heel slip when stepping. I found I had to take about 6" steps in order to keep the cleats on the ice. Doing so, I was able to safely get to where I was going, but very slowly. I wouldn't recommend them for anyone having to go long distance on icy going, but for a short distance, say to a car for the house, they work.
