Yes, it smells similar to other chemicals that you would use for cleaning, polishing or lubricating. However, I just smelled a dab that I squeezed on my finger. I haven't used it all that much. As I recall, it worked for my needs

Does it work for stainless steel scratches?

Wife says "yes" it does remove minor scratches. I does indeed make stainless steel look terrific. I assume the scratches are very minor.
