well worth it!
hi.. bought this as we have been reading the classic book "The Witches" to the classes of 7/8yr and 9/10yr olds I work with at our local primary school. It went down a storm!.. Even the kids who were absent when we played it them have borrowed it from me to take home and watch as their class mates were so excited about it.Seeing the film helped bring the book alive and for what it cost it was amazing it had magical qualities beyond our wildest dreams... why?... because from start to finish it had 61 kids entranced and focussed which was amazing for us as staff we were able to get on with some unfinished jobs or just sit back and enjoy the film ourselves .. which is definateley a first!!

One of Dahls best stories good film too
I bought this for my little lad to watch! I read the book and had the film when I was younger and it is still good today. Angelica huston plays the grand high witch to a tee. Quite a spooky story I could always remember the little girl in the painting and this still gives me chills now thinking about it! My boy really enjoyed this film too but he does keep looking closely at women to see if they're really witches in disguise! The witches is a good clean children's movie that can be enjoyed by all the family, I'd recommend younger children watching with a adult as there is some scary scenes and may be frightened. If you haven't seen this already I'd recommend you do so as its a good little film!

Five star movie. One star DVD.
This DVD is really poor. The movie is perfect! Especially to watch at Halloween, with a close friend or maybe a family member or two. But the DVD is... no.The movie's original aspect ratio was 1:85. But here it has been shrunk or a 1:37, or 4:3 aspect ratio. Now when DVDs were starting out, I would understand a 4:3 or letterboxed DVD, because TV's weren't generally widescreen. But now. Warner, I think it's time for a re release. Or a blu ray if you would be so kind. There's no kind of remastering here, it's a slap on to a disc release for a quick buck. Very disappointing.Does four stars look way too generous? Well I'm also rating the film. I knocked a star off for the DVD alone, but seriously, as this is the only way you can get the movie, just get it! It's really good fun.

Presenting: a Nic Roeg film?!
Nic Roeg seems an unusual choice to direct this Roald Dahl children's classic, but it works. I'm sure he wasn't happy about the tacked on happy ending, but it's a fun watch, even managing to downplay the misogyny of the original text. The Creature Shop models work surprising well when cut together with live mouse footage, although I suspect a lot was shot with rats rather than mice. Anjelica Houston is perfect as the Head Witch -hamming it up -but her performance fits the OTT cartoonish energy of the film.

Just good fun
First saw this film in 1991 and loved it. In October this year I visited Newquay with my grandchildren and to my surprise saw the Hotel used in the film. When we returned home I tried to find the DVD in the local shops as my grandchildren wanted to watch it, but I had no luck finding it anywhere. Two minutes on Amazon and within a couple of days we were able to sit down after Sunday lunch and enjoy this smashing story together. Thanks Amazon!

LOVES IT!
After learning about the Rhald Dhal book The Witches in school my daughter begged me to buy the DVD. I reluctantly agreed thinking it would never be as good as the book. Well I was wrong! I love the book but the film is fabulous, not too scary but at the same time keeping the Spooky feel of the book. Ok some bits have been altered for the sake of "disney-fieing" it but it is a good film. Now kept high up on the dvd rack as it is one of my 8year olds favourites!
