How much weight can it hold?

I’d say yo to 10 lbs. I have some candles and a picture frame on mine and it’s holding well.

Does the light only turn on at night? or does it have some sort of timer to control when the light turns on?

You have to turn it on and off manually at the battery pack, which we hid behind a little cute plant on each one.
