Bar Harbor Wild Herring Fillets Seasoned with Cracked Pepper, 6.7 oz – Naturally Wood Smoked [Pack of 12]

First of all- although I like a bit of fresh cracked pepper on some of my foods, I have never ordered or purchased something before listed as "with cracked pepper". I ordered these (and also their sardines and also their kippers), from this company because I was so pleased with their canned clams. I am a vegetarian, and get a lot of my protein from canned fish, so I wanted to try the rest of the lineup from this company. I tried the Kippers and was pleasantly surprised (having never had kippers at all before) that they were quite good. Then I tried these herring with the pepper.... I ate the whole can in one sitting. Adding the pepper was genius! And for me- surprising! Next I will try their sardines. I know these are not the cheapest around- but the quality and taste is fantastic.

Excellent we have nothing to complain about, really very good and it was what we was looking for. Nothing to say, we had nothing to complain about.

These are great if you are doing keto or dieting, you don’t have to eat multiple tins of them, some of the best and most affordable

This herring is for the pepper lovers who don’t mind a food punch when they put the fish in their mouth. The non-pepper version is much better for people like me who don’t like taking a bath in pepper. The fish itself is excellent, but for mild palates like mine, the amount of pepper is simply too much. This is obviously a very specific product for a very specific consumer, of which I am not. But I did try it, and my rating is more reflective of my personal taste for the product, but not necessarily the quality of the product for its intended audience.

These are the best smoked herring fillets I’ve ever had. Cracked black pepper and water (who needs all the oil) I’ve been eating at least 2 cans per day.

Observations: (1) These are wholly intact fillets: no cannery flakes or scraps. (2) The smoke quality is natural and bold. (3) The cracked black pepper brings an austere spice counterpointing the deep smoke flavors. (4) Bar Harbor could skirt reviewer criticism by swapping out their outmoded photo of the can's front stating, "Product of Canada." Current packaging now notes, "Sustainably harvested from the clear, cold waters of the North Sea," and the back affirms, "Product of Latvia." Product page verbiage stating, "Fresh off the docks of Maine" is also outdated. Keto-friendly and intensely flavorful, this will dazzle many while it may also overwhelm fans of subtlety.
