Q: Can the 2 piece lids go in the dishwasher?

You shouldn't re-use the lids for actual canning -- only new ones. For storing grains or (refrigerated) foods, I re-use lids dozens if not hundreds of times and ALWAYS wash in the dishwasher. Mine is set to heated wash, heated dry so they're all but sterilized. I interleave lids between handles of silverware in the silverware compartments of my GE dishwasher, keeping them apart. I wash the rings in the dishwasher also, usually on the top rack (they'll be on the outside of the lids and if canning, will be sterilized with everything else). Drop a ring right side up over a couple of the glass wires -- you can overlap them with mugs etc. but I do try not to completely cover them. You can do 10 or so easily. I've never had one deform from heat whether in dishwasher or canner.

Q: Are these safe to use in the oven, for example, with mason jar baking (banana bread/brownies)?

You're not supposed to can in the oven because even if you set the temperature to 200-- 225 degrees, the heat isn't even and a normal oven thermostat kicks in and turns off at 25 degrees from the set temperature. Uneven heat shatters jars, and the Ball jars I've gotten recently often have embedded air bubbles -- and that's a much lower temperature than you would usually bake a quick bread at. I wouldn't take a chance (not sure I'd take a chance no matter what the mfg says!) on a jar exploding in my face. If you really really want to try "baking" in a mason jar, it might be safe enough if you put the jars in a pot taller than they are, on a rack, and cover to the top of the glass with boiling water -- but it would be a lot more trouble than it's worth as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, these jars are free of any heavy metal.

Canning soup is an excellent use for these jars.
