That's correct. I'm not sure if that was a design flaw, or they intentionally made it that way. If you want to attempt to change the batteries, there's really no easy way of doing it, but you have to pull apart the bottom half of the handle to the gun in order to do this, which is where the batteries are located. Unfortunately, once you do that the gun doesn't snap back in place the way it should, which will leave it loose and could damage the gun altogether.
