I wanted it to be Better than it is

Not having been a Gourmet magazine subscriber, I may be less attuned to the nuances. I enjoyed other Ruth R books, but this one didn't resonate the way some of her more personal writing did. Maybe it's one of those "You had to be there" kind of books?

Favorite Memories of Paris’ Gourmet Food Scene As Compiled by the Iconic Gourmet Magazine Writer

I got this book for my mother, but couldn’t help browsing through it myself! It is a wonderfully written book, with many memories and the occasional great recipe from Paris. Anyone who read Gourmet Magazine and followed this author’s articles in that magazine will love this book, as she compiles her years of writing about the food in Paris into this great book. For Foodies and non-Foodies alike, this book is a wonderful read. I highly recommend this book.

A collection to be savored.

There are two things that comfort me. A good book and a good, simple meal. This collection of articles taken from the late Gourmet Magazine perform both tasks well.

Aaaahhhh Paris..

I used to go through Gourmet where I worked to check out the Paris and London Journals. The rest of the magazine was great as well, but I particularly liked the two columns from my two fav places on earth. The book has some really good essays on post WWII rationing, and Parisian life during wartime. In fact any column or essay hasHistory, social studies, food, travel, recipes and just life in Paris, that we read and say " Aaaahhhh Paris".... Sometimes the articles and columns are all some people will ever experience. But thankfully they are great and we can still read them.

I love Reichl's work and have read all of her books

Hi,This book is a compilation of articles from Gourmet that are dated and heavy reading. There are a number of articles all by the same food writer, and I found his work especially long and cumbersome. I love Reichl's work and have read all of her books, but this early project where she serves as a curator and an editor did not make a connection with me. I am a huge fan of food and love to read

I am a huge fan of food and love to read... why not combine the two?! This book pulls from the writing of Gourmet magazine, highlighting the best articles throughout the decades. Some are funny, some touching, all delicious. Perfect book for those who don't have much time to read, but want quality writing in short chapter format. Great read!

I loved this book

I loved this book. It is a collection of essays written over many decades, with stories about Parisian food, life and history. Many of the essays were written after WW II, and offer a view of Paris struggling to recover after the restrictions and shortages of the war. Not all are about food - there are wonderful descriptions of places, characters and city life. The culinary details in some of the older articles are fascinating - there are meals that will never again be made and foods that will never again be eaten. A few old recipes are included - which are mostly for historical interest since I suspect many ingredients won't be found, and most of us simply don't have the time. The serious attention to minute cuisine details may appal some if you stop to think about who was engaged in such labor-intensive activities, and how much they might have been paid - but you have to admire a culture that is so food-obsessed, and so respectful of food.
