There is a cd/dvd tray available but is tray there you need to print disks.

Yes, it is stored fitted to the bottom of the lower paper tray and is easily unclipped for use. Follow the instructions in the manual. (download from Canon site).

Will it also print one - sided?

Yes this printer can print one side only, as well as both sides (duplex), or multiple pages per sheet. All this can be set in the preferences, which tends to memorise the last setting.

Is anyone using this printer to print on printable discs i.e. cd, dvd, bd?

It's very good indeed. Super high quality and exact. But be careful. I bought Disketch to design labels but then found out it doesn't support the Pixma 700 series. I daresay it will print them properly but you'll have to manually adjust the positioning. I'm using Canon's own Easy Photo Print Editor which works perfectly, but has a diabolically simplistic colour palette for fonts. The only disappointment. The process takes a bit of getting used to, but once you know what to do, it's easy. Very impressed as it's the only reason I bought the printer (which I got in 3 days from Canon direct having waited 9 weeks to even get a delivery date from Amazon - £59.99 too - bargain!).
