Ballykissangel - Series 1-6 [DVD]

No spoilers in this review.... which I had seen both when it was originally broadcast and as a repeat: so I put it on my wish list and was given it as a birthday present.It is a glimpse into the 'goings on' of a small rural town in Ireland, covering the lives of the inhabitants. Here we have a wide range of people balancing their private and 'communial' lives between what they want and what is expected of them. A wide range of issues is covered, sometimes in a serious manner and sometimes humorously; but always respectfully and with no rude words or sex scenes.As an amateur social historian with an interest in what makes people 'do what they do' I watch my films many times. This series gives me plenty to think on; as a whole and about the individual characters and issues.As others have said the series has a 'shift' towards the end as village life evolves. I will certainly re-watch them often. The first five series I am more familiar with than the last one. I need to think more into what happens and possibly this will help me appreciate the characters more. Often I find I get better enjoyment watching films more than once which is a benefit of owning the dvd.The design of the boxes is easy to use to get them in and out. Each disc is set for subtitles on, so if you don't need these you have to switch them off before clicking 'play'.

The series splits into four distinct parts. Purists will say that only the first three seasons count, ending as they do with the departure of the two characters who would continue to symbolise the series. Real questions left unresolved at that point, however, allowed for a number of new stories. Coupled with strong new characters, this meant that for me, Ballykissangel-proper ends with the fifth episode of season five, Imelda Egan's words rendering any further exploration of Niamh's storyline superfluous. The remaining seven episodes are pleasant but unnecessary, with very little in the way of a sustaining story arc (although the very well done season finale does draw things to a close). Season six is to all intents and purposes a separate entity, symbolically acknowledged by the new titles, and should probably best be treated as such.I retained a liking for the series having seen it the first time around, and thoroughly enjoyed both re-watching what I remembered and catching so much that had apparently passed me by. The cast is perfectly pitched and the characters well developed, with both humour and drama in abundance. A BBC series prominently featuring Catholicism was always going to involve a level of 'poke the priesthood', but the predictable pitting of 'cantankerous PP' and 'imperious bishop' against goodly curates (who more often than not accept the wisdom of the world over that of their own church) is usually tempered by a stirring defence of Fr Mac, who is one of few characters to last the whole series.The weaker new characters in season six don't come close to making up for the drop-off of key figures throughout, and following the conclusion of, season five, and the stories are as aimless as they are inconsistent. There is nonetheless still plenty of charm, and you might as well allow yourself to enjoy these eight episodes without making comparisons.The series overall is a joy, and you can hardly go wrong for the price.

I just loved this series when it first appeared on tv, but was a tad wary of buying the DVD set as so many series do not seem quite so good upon revisiting - seeing a few reruns on tv and a price of under £25 for the whole six series was enough for me to take the plunge, and I am so very pleased that I did. Seeing it all again has not diminished this wonderful series one iota, in fact it seems even better than it did first time round. Ballykissangel has become a piece of classic viewing - it is outstanding in all respects and is suitable for the whole family, though I have to say that the first three series are the best of all. Series 4 and 5 are different for reasons that are obvious for those who have watched it all, but are still excellent IMNSHO - to be entirely frank, Series 6 continues bravely on but so many of the original characters have disappeared that it is not quite up to the mark of the previous five series. Whether I would bother watching Series 6 again is debateable - there is no definitive ending to Series 6 and in some ways, it is better remembered by finishing at Series 5 - but that does not detract from the cracking first five series and I no doubt will watch this wonderful series again more than once !

I watched Ballykissangel on tv years ago, then bough each dvd release individually and never watched it until now. I had forgotten just how good this show was, there is humour, sadness, great scenes of Ireland and the acting is impeccable. The characters are so well portrayed that you feel you know them.

DVDs worked fine. Everything as it should be.

Prachtserie! Jaren geleden gezien op tv maar het blijft mooi. Jammer dat er geen Nederlandse ondertiteling is maar Engelse ondertiteling is ook goed te doen. Een aanrader!

Loved this show when we saw it the first time and loving watching it again. It is Europian format and so the DVDs will not play on most US players, but I had one that can play them and it was a LOT cheaper than the US format ones for sale.

Je suis accro de l'Irlande, et je passe toutes mes vacances d'été à Gorey (Co. Wexford) depuis une dizaine d'années. J'ai découvert cette série par des amis irlandais. C'est tellement typique de l'Irlande. Cet été, j'ai visité Glendalough, et en y allant, je me suis arrêtée à Avoca (le Ballykissangel de la série). C'est exactement ça : quand on passe le pont, on a le pub Fitzgerald d'Assumpta juste en face. Sur le côté, l'endroit où Brandon va pêcher pour réfléchir, un peu plus loin, le commissariat où vivent Ambrose et Niamh. L'église est bien celle de Peter (même si elle ne s'appelle pas St Joseph). Il n'y a que la maison de Quigley que je n'ai pas trouvée. Je m'attendais à les voir, avec Padraig, Siobhan, Liam et Donal (tellement culchies) et Father Mac bien sûr. Seul bémol : à ma connaissance, la série n'existe pas en version doublée ou sous-titrée en français, ce qui peut poser problème aux non-anglophones.
