Confirming that Maida is correct and Philip is not. While you usually have to keep your finger on the trigger to keep it running, if you pull the lock button all the way back while it's running, it will stay locked. Arguably this is "less safe" - power tools are inherently dangerous any way. This one (supposedly) cuts 3/4" branches, while other "safer" models cut only 1/2" or 5/8". This makes it more likely to accidentally sever a human digit. So it depends on whether you want a safe tool, or one that does the job it's designed to do.

Have no idea if this is a motor brake, but the blades immediately stop when the trigger is released.
