Q: Do you have to add on something else to use salt? The guy at the pool store told me you can't just hook it up and use it.

Unit has everything needed to connect to pools with 1.5" threaded and 1.25" compression connectors, including in/out flow adapters, T-valves, 1.5/1.25 adapters, 2"x48?" Hoses. Integrated pump/filter/chlorinators/sanitizers are not very common. Most vendors sell separate units to mix and match needs. This is an 'all your eggs in one basket' device, but Intex does sell parts and sub-assemblies if they break. However, if a major part goes out - the pump turbine - then you may find it cheaper to replace the entire unit rather than only the pump - I get about 2-3 seasons out of this unit on an Intex16x48 in Gulf Coast region before the pool rusts. Set pump on pavers to keep fire ants out, a full sized skimmer used weekly, vacuum hose to use monthly, and a QT of shock for when the power goes off without you knowing it - power outage, popped breaker, or failure to re-plug after mowing. Great product, I would not have a pool without it. Highly recommended. Adding stabilizer makes the free Cl last longer, for better sanitizing and possibly allows you to run unit fewer hours each day.

Q: Is the sand filter pump suppose to run all the time,or does it shut down when the salt water pump shuts off?

The salt water pump is what pumps the water through the sand filter. So when the pump shuts off the sand filter doesn't run. The pump runs on a timer that can but adjusted. So the pump doesn't run continuously.

Q: This is may be a stupid question - but - how do you introduce the salt to the system? is there a hopper or bin for salt storage?

The salt is dissolved in the pool water and that's it. U don't need to replace it unless u dump a lot of water out. When the water evaporates, the salt stays. The salt water system converts the salt water into chlorine. Pure awesomeness.

Q: What do you do when the service light comes on

This happened to me. Service light came on 25 months after I bought it, one month after the warranty expired. I called Intex and they said I need a new electrode, but this model is discontinued so my only option is to buy a whole new system. They were not helpful.
