The taste is smooth and creamy without being overly sweet—closer to a lightly flavored vanilla latte than a heavy dessert. My doctor recommended I drink these before surgery. I started then, but keep them on hand for a quick easy breakfast or lunch when I know I won’t get a lot of protein that day. The taste isn’t bad alone, but I usually put them in my ninja with some fruit—a banana and cocoa, some blueberries, or whatever fresh or frozen fruit I have on hand. It would be 5 stars if the taste was just a little better. I updated this fron 4 to 5 starts because I’ve discovered new ways to drink Ensure. I’ve been getting vanilla now. I mix it half and half with coffee and add cinnamon and nutmeg. It’s good either cold over ice or hot. It tastes just like a Starbucks skinny vanilla latte, only with a lot of protein and a lot less cost. Try it!

Love the vanilla flavor, even though initially I thought it was too sweet. I even added apple pic spice and a dash of vanilla extract as a suggestion by my Bariatric team. That tasted great! Then I just drank it plain and also like it that way also. I’m using Ensure for my 2 week pre-surgery diet.

My husband, who is 74, went through a health crisis brought about by a throat injury this last year, and as a result lost 30 lbs and a lot of muscle mass rather quickly. He weighed only 172 lbs to start with, and had been extremely physically fit all his life. Coping with the injury to his throat was challenging enough, but suddenly feeling old and weak and sickly, I know, was just as difficult for a man who, up until then, still felt strong and “young”. His doctor suggested he try drinking Ensure Max Protein. I’m so glad he did! Within a very short time, my husband regained 18 of the 30 lbs he had lost and we began to see his muscles bulking up again. I was motivated to write this review tonight when I noticed his biceps BULGING from his tshirt! He’s not quite back where he once was (he is 74, after all) but he’s come a long way in only six or seven months! Best of all, he’s FEELING better, stronger and more like himself again! So this review isn’t about the taste or convenience or consistency of Ensure Max Protein but about the fact that, in my husband’s case at least, it actually does what it says it will do. Oh yes, it’s a little pricey, but worth every penny to us!

My family and I call Ensure “Milkshake” for my dad. He loves it that much! He’s a four time cancer survivor — a survivor of lung, throat, prostate, and skin cancers. He takes an Ensure Max Protein Shake every morning with his medicine as his appetite is not the greatest in the early morning hours. So far, I have bought over 350 drinks of Ensure on Amazon for my dad. A few times during my dad’s throat cancer battle, my husband and I fed him Ensure through his PEG tube by the recommendation of his nutritionist at his cancer treatment center. He tolerated it well. He was between two tube feeding formulas, one very rich and one not so rich. We fed my dad 4x a day through his PEG tube for several months. My dad was beyond thrilled when he was able to drink and eat, once again, and his feeding tube was finally removed. We donated $800 worth of his unopened (two other name brands) tube feeding formulas to the Humane Society. He loves Ensure very much. Ensure Max Protein Shake was recommended by his family doctor as the best formula for him with 30g of protein, 1g of sugar, and 150 calories. His doctor gave him a handful of varieties to try. My dad has tried all of them and seems to enjoy French Vanilla the best. He, also, loves the Birthday Cake and Creamy Peach for a change. All the drinks are very nutritious, good, creamy, and smooth in his opinion. Often, we add milk and ice to his “Milkshakes”, too. When I asked my dad for his opinion of Ensure, he said “Are you going to bring me one now?”! There you go. That says it all.

Tastes too sweet! It says no sugar, but they must have loaded it with other sweeteners. I am adding my own whey protein powder for an extra boost. This is only a trial for me. I will think about it before reordering.
