So far...so good
I wanted a lightweight hand vac I could take to the car & just do a quickie once over to keep it looking spiffy. It is important to note that the charge only holds about 18 minutes for 18 volts, according to the tech I spoke with. The first time I used it, it seemed to run down very fast, but I'd been playing with it...cutting it off & on to see how it worked. Nothing wrong with that...but test it, recharge it & then use it. Keep it on only when you're actually vacuuming...don't just set it down "on" & do other things, too. Powerful enough to pick up all the stuff in the car, including little rocks. I empty it after each use. I guess you wouldn't have to, but I think all vacs are more efficent if emptied each time. Highly recommend for quick small jobs...so far, anyway. o;)UPDATE: I've had this little handheld vacuum a little over a year now & have used it over & over to clean out the car. The power is remarkable...picks up everything. I also use it to pick up the dirt when I sweep in the house. I clean it out every time...& you have to keep the filter dusted as well. I lightly tap it to get the loose dirt off & brush it with an old toothbrush. The housing that holds the filter also needs to be cleaned because little sandy pieces get caught in the air holes. I keep it plugged in to recharge when not in use.I recently bought a Dyson rechargeable regular vacuum cleaner & have already taken it back because the price doesn't match the value. I'm spoiled @ the 18 minutes charge I get with this B&D handheld vac. It made me wish that B&D would make a larger rechargeable vac that would also hold a longer recharge than the Dyson did @ only 6 minutes, or @ least offer an attachment package with a long attachment wand or hose...I can't very well crawl around on my hands & knees to clean up except when I'm deep cleaning behind things. So handy for dusting windowsills & blinds. I also use the B&D handheld for baseboards & oh, my, it is so quick & easy.In short...I'm a fan & am very happy with this little B&D handheld vacuum cleaner. Thanx for making it!

Totally defective.
We first ordered this item about 6 years ago. It gave good service till the battery went bad. I thought first it was the charger which failed to work. We ordered a new charger only to find that the battery would just no longer hold a charge. Being a retired electrician I opted to replace the battery until I found out a replacement cost about half the cost of a totally new unit. So this year (2015) we bought a new unit. Immediately discovered that it does not hold a charge long enough to run at speed beyond 2 minutes of intermittent use, i.e., not running the entire time of use in individual cleanup tasks. This is something the old unit, when it was fresh, would do. Then the charger unit would shut down before vac was completely charged. I would go in to use the vac only to find the charger had shut down (The blue charging indicator off) and the unit had low power because of an incomplete charge.I opted to go online to the B&D website to obtain a new charger. When I entered the number associated with the charging unit(ETPCA-P181021U3) their site stated they had no such number in their parts inventory! I then entered the vacs model number, PHV1810, and it came back with a different charger number, the one for the original vac. The ratings on the old vac were 23v 85 ma. The newer PHV 1810 specifically stated to only replace charger with a unit that developed 24v @ 210ma. Knowing a little about electricity, I know the reason why you can't use A higher amperage charging unit for a designated battery as you can damage the battery and overheat it and it could explode. I attempted, just for the sake of it to connect the old charger to the newer unit to know avail. It won't charge it up.Am update on this original post. I have changed our rating to 4 stars now. B&D have sent us a new unit free of charge. We greatly appreciate this offer.Yet another update 10/4/016.This replacement unit by B&D has indeed gone the way of the first 2. Unit will not hold a charge. When plugged in the charging light will go on. But if left for several hours, like overnight it seems to actually drain the battery down and unit only runs for about 10 to 15 seconds. Enough is enough. B&D has changed something in it's design of this unit, an probably is the battery supplier. A cheaper alternative I have to assume. The first unit lasted over 4 years before it wouldn't hold a charge. All of you who gave this unit 4 or 5 stars, wait a year or less before you make any decision. We gotten our last hand vac from B&D. Their more expensive but Dyson is our next buy. They no longer make most replacement parts for this unit including the battery. Unless you have $45 to throw away, don't go near this unit.

UPDATE: STILL THE BEST CORDLESS HAND VAC AFTER 2 AND A HALF YEARS BUT JUST WENT THROUGH MY 2ND CHARGING CORD.
I purchased this vac from Amazon, at a good price I might add. This is a great little vacuum. Battery lasts long enough for most chores about 15 minutes. We bought it specifically for cleaning our stairs which are a pain to clean with any full size vac. With this one it is easy and as a bonus we can clean up any mess in just a seconds, whether it's crumbs on the rug or spilled paper chips from emptying the shredder. I even can quickly do the whole living room rug on my hands and knees quickly in case someone is coming over unexpectedly. It is such a convenience and so much better than the last one we had from a different manufacturer. I wish we had replaced that one sooner. I highly recommend this vac. I have no complaints only praise. You do have to maintain it as with anything. Well done Black and Decker! IT IS NOW ALMOST TWO AND A HALF YEARS OLD AND STILL THE BEST MONEY I'VE EVER SPENT. WE LOVE THIS THING AND IT STILL WORKS LIKE NEW AFTER MORE THAN TWO YEARS. STILL HOLDS A GOOD CHARGE AND STILL WORKS FOR ABOUT 12 MINUTES OF STRAIGHT USE, STILL LONG ENOUGH TO DO MOST THINGS YOU WOULD USE A HAND VAC FOR. I THOUGHT THE BATTERY WOULD BE DEAD BY NOW BUT THIS THING IS GREAT AND STILL GOING STRONG. WE ARE ON OUR SECOND FILTER SO THEY LAST A WHILE. IT IS ALSO GOOD THAT YOU CAN WASH IT OUT FROM TIME TO TIME INCLUDING THE FILTER AND KEEP IT VACUUMING LIKE NEW. THE FILTERS ARE REASONABLE. YOU HAVE TO LET THE VAC AND FILTER DRY VERY WELL BECAUSE PUTTING IT IN DAMP WILL CAUSE MOISTURE TO BUILD UP WHICH WILL RUIN THE MOTOR. I STILL HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS VACUUM! The only problem I have found is that I just went through my second charging cord. I don't mistreat them and always pull them out by the end but for some reason they seem to short out after about a year. Going to order a third now since the vacuum is still going strong. They are not expensive.
