Panasonic SC-XH170 Energy Star 5.1-Channel 1000-Watt DVD Home Theater System

I use it in the den (roughly 15' x 15' room) where I had to replace an old panasonic unit that I messed up while moving to my new place. Haven't used it a whole lot just yet though. The day I got it all set up, with the unit's original speakers, I was pretty disappointed with the sound, it just sounded too sharp, like it didn't have enough bass. I ended up using my old speakers with this unit and the sound is much much better.

I bought this when when the cost was considerably lower than now and it was a great buy for the money. Designed to be used with a Panasonic Viera Link TV (which I own), it is easy to set up. I turned it on and it worked immediately, both with sound originating from the TV or from the DVD player. The TV remote even works with it. Speaker set up is simple and the directions are clear. The system has a nice appearance--black and sleek. The speakers are small but they seem more than adequate. The sound is very good for the moderate size (c. 14 x 15 feet) room. Base is so good that loud movie sounds scare my dog. I am happy I purchased this unit--especially since I bought it right before a fairly hefty price increase!

I read all the reviews before I purchased. The only negative is the system is a lot smaller in person than it looks like online. Nevertheless, this small system is just what I needed. Don't know what to say to the negative reviews and the bad experiences while setting up but all of my experiences have been positive. I bought this system because I purchased a Panasonic TV a couple of months ago and the sound from the TV wasn't nearly good enough. OK but had to turn it all the way up just to hear from 20 feet away and don't have a crowd because you would never hear it. I unpacked the system, hooked up all the wires and immediately it sounded great. Make sure you purchase an HDMI cable that will reach from your TV to the back of the DVD player. That's all you will need. I was dreading the setup with turning the TV speakers off and setting the correct input and all that but I turned on the DVD after hooking everything up and it went through this on screen setup and I was done in a jiffy. I didn't know what ARC meant at the time, and still don't but I selected that option and everything sounds great. I have it set up with all the speakers up front by the TV so the wires are not an issue. It even is controlled by my ATT Uverse universal control. Haven't actually tried to play a DVD yet but the unit turns on when I turn on my cable box and TV and the sound is controlled with the same remote. Just like one of the other reviewers stated, there is a slight lag time (somewhere around 10 seconds) where you will have the TV sound only then the surround sound kicks in. I feel obligated to include this review because this was a great deal. The quality and the price. I hope to have eased some concerns. I had plenty prior to purchasing. Keeping my fingers crossed that it will continue to provide quality sound.

I am changing my review of this product. It was great for 5 months and then started to have a black screen instead of picture. Now its been 6 months and it has stopped showing picture all together.The surround sound still works, but I cant use the DVD player! Why did I spend almost $200.00 for just 6 months worth. Now I have to send it in for repairs and go with out for how ever long it takes.

I was disappointed at the quality of the sound. These are tiny speakers, and does not respond very well to deliver quality sound. The main problem was when I connected an LG TV with HDMI, the on and off button on the DVD would turn on and off the TV as well even when I did not want it on and there was no way I could turn the TV off. Well, I was looking for a cheap system to survive a couple of years before I bought a better one. I have two other very good panasonic sound systems and they are super. I am returning this in the next couple of days.

The equipment works great but the speaker wires are really, really short. We have a tiny living room and the wires were still to short.

After watching the first movie with my new upconvert DVD and speaker system I must say I'm very impressed. Next some things others may want to know. The speakers attach to the DVD player, not the TV. The speakers are easy to attach, it's all color coded. Speaker cords are long enough. The ARC works great, it didn't at first. Make sure you hook your HDMI cable to the correct HDMI port, one should have ARC by it, mine is HDMI 2. Set both your DVD player and your TV to the correct setting for ARC to work. I went back through several times getting the speakers to work off the TV alone,(with the dvd player on) think it was the fifth time re-checking all the settings before they started to work. Now for the review. Ever seen a close up on a movie that was so clear of a mans face you can count the whiskers? I can now. yep the picture is so clear on my 50 inch plasma I could count all the whiskers. The surround so crisp and clear from feet softly moving across gravel on the ground all the way up to explosions I could feel pass through me. I had the volume way up to 75 filing the living room with awesome sound! I love my early Christmas present to myself. For those of you hat do not have a Panasonic TV, I doubt if you can get the speakers to work off your TV alone. Foe those that do have a Panasonic TV, go for it!

when you finally get the volume up to around 75 it sounds great,all speakers put out good sound for their size and wished it had more hdmi imputs. overall good product for the price.
