3D Modeling in Silo: The Official Guide

The Author of this book really didn't do a good job of making it. It started out okay, but then it just went down hill the further I read it and did what it said, especially when it came to creating the girl. A lot of the things it told me to do didn't work out for me. I pretty much had to look for other ways for accomplishing something. Also, the spelling and grammar of the book is not good. I saw misspelled words and fragmented sentences it. The author also got some of the commands in Silo wrong. In some instances, he called a command of one function for another function, if you know what I mean. The illustrations in the book aren't good either. I'm a visual learner, which means I have to see what's going in order to accomplish something. But the pictures in the book aren't very clear. Even with a magnifying glass, I had a hard time making out what was being accomplished in the illustrations. Because of that, I ended up messing up in some areas and had to start over again. Furthermore, the author's modeling techniques aren't good either. I think there are many mistakes in the way he models the girl. I believe I can come up with better ways than what he can. Besides all that, he didn't complete everything. On the cover of the book, it shows the girl with her mouth open and showing her teeth. But he didn't show how to create the teeth or other insides of her mouth, such as the tongue and roof of the mouth. Anyways, I had such a hard time modeling the girl through this book that I just abandoned the project and deleted everything. The only good thing about this book is that it taught me how to use Silo and got me exposed to organic 3D modeling. I don't believe I will be using Silo again since I found other 3D modeling software that pretty much behaves the same way as Silo and then some. This book might be good for introducing a software and getting someone exposed to 3D modeling, but it is not a good modeling book. The cons outweigh the pros in this book, therefore it's pretty much a waste of money.

If you really want to learn the program Silo, this book will have you covered. It is rated for the Novice to Intermediate and that is what the book is for, though a beginner or expert may be able to use the book as the basis for learning Silo's features, the project would be a bit much for the beginner and probably bore an expert level user.The book's layout is excellent and there are plenty of pictures. Most the of the images, and they're referenced often, lack enough contrast to allow you to actually see what the authors are talking about. However, you can download the models on a chapter by chapter basis if you really need to visually confirm how something was done. There is also a Bonus chapter on UV Mapping that is a must download.I'm not someone who feels they need to model everything from scratch and only model when I simply cannot find what I'm looking for or need something special and got the book to get a better grasp of some of the more advanced features of Silo (Displacement Painting, etc.) So for me, I found the book to be an excellent purchase from Amazon.If you own Silo, and your name is not Glen Southern, Amazon has the book for you!

I just finished my first pass through the book, looking for some tricks and tips for a project I am working on using Silo. I found myself stopping and reading more than I needed just because of how well written the processes are for creating the character in the book. Silo is a quick program to use and the authors have done an great job of taking advantage of that and using it to get to the process of modeling. I was glad to see they used several options for fleshing things out and not stick to the same process for each phase of the creation. Give the user / reader a better set of tools to work with in the future.As others have said , this is an excellent modeling book, regardless of application being used, it just so happens Silo is also a very intuitive package to work with.

The book is very good and thorough (although I have trouble seeing the model wires on some of the smaller images).The modeling techniques can be used with other 3D modeling applications, but I recommend using Silo with the book. I did the first tutorial, the torso, with Silo. Then I did the same tutorial with another popular modeling application. Silo's tweak tool made it a lot easier to get results similar to the authors.Silo is arguably the easiest, best, and definitely the cheapest subdivision modeling program available, and this book will teach you how to use it.

I was really looking forward to this book. I just received it today, and when I went to download the companion files, I found the referenced website is either being blocked or is rejecting connection attempts, using IE9.The site does work with Firefox 5. I was able to download the content using Firefox.This is not acceptable to me!I have attempted to contact the publisher (Focal Press).Focal Press returned my message, and assured me they are fixing the problem.

If 3D applications fill you with dread, and you wonder how you can make so much as a stick figure, this book will answer that question.First, it takes the dread out of such applications, with easy to follow instructions and exercises.Second, it makes the learning fun.If you have just purchased Silo, like me, or if you are an Old Hand, this book is the essential guide for you. Perfect as a reference also.

Silo is a reasonably-priced, excellent program for 3D modeling, but like other graphics programs, it has its own special features. This is where the manual comes in, and this book, by an expert in the field, gives you the information you need, including tutorials, to get the most from Silo. Go for it!

If you are new to polygon modeling, or have Silo and want to get the most out of it, this is the book. It covers everything, from why you want to use quads, to all the nitty-gritty of the program itself. Silo will do both organic and hard-surface modeling.

kindle版とペーパーバック版のどちらを買おうか迷ったのですが、その時には〔今は消えているようです）"電子書籍版にはCDの内容が付属しません"という説明文がアメリカのAmazon Kindle Storeに書いてあったのでペーパーバック版を購入しました。ですが、この本にはCDが付属しません。当初CDに収録されていた内容は、本の中に書いてあるURLをたどりDLすることになります。通常1〜2か月での発送と書いてありますが、実際には2週間くらいで到着すると思います。（通常より早く届けられそうだという旨のemailが届きます）ですので、iPadやMac版（PC版もあるのかな？）Kindle等大型の電子書籍リーダーがある場合にはそちらで購入した方が早くて良いのではないかと思います。解像度の問題を懸念されると思いますが書籍版でも選択されたエッジなどが印刷の過程で潰れてよく見えないということもあり実際にはあまり変わらないと思います。それでも気になるという方はKindle Storeで一度電子書籍版の試し読みをして見ることをお勧めします。本そのものの内容はとてもよくできています。ステップ・バイ・ステップでハイクオリティな女性のモデルのモデリング方法をレクチャーしつつ、N-gonをどう処理すべきなのかなど、モデリングにおける実践的なテクニックを数多く紹介しているので、女性モデルのみならずその他のモデリングにもじゅうぶんに応用できます。Siloの解説本なのですが、特別な機能をあまり使っていないので、書かれている事はmodoやmaya、LightWaveやmetasequoiaなど数多くの3DCGアプリケーションでそっくり応用することができます。Siloユーザーでなくても、ぜひ一冊持っておいて損はないと思います。先ほども書いた通り、少し印刷の荒さが目立つので、インターネットサイトからDLしたファイルと見比べつつ読み進めることで、より理解が深まりそうです。

Un excellent ouvrage pour débuter avec Silo 2. Il est écrit en anglais, mais avec beaucoup d'illustrations ce qui le rends facilement compréhensible même si vous n'êtes pas un "pro" de l'anglais ( un minimum est quand même requis ). La lecture se fait facilement car elle est bien documentée par des illustrations détaillées pour chaque étape. Le projet étudié est la création d'un personnage féminin du début à la fin avec tous les détails de la réalisation ( même les doigts, les orteils .... ) J'insiste sur ce point car souvent dans les autres ouvrages certaines parties sont survolées rapidement, mais là tout y est ( tout le livre est consacré à la réalisation d'un seul personnage ). A recommander pour qui veut apprendre à modéliser avec Silo 2 ou même se perfectionner, car si le livre peut être abordé par un débutant, il concerne aussi ceux qui connaissent Silo 2 et veulent progresser avec de bonnes bases. A la fin de l'ouvrage vous serez capable de réaliser un personnage !!! ( et non pas un vase, 3 carrés et une boule ... ) Le niveau atteint à la fin du livre est "amateur confirmé"....

As there are not to many books about Silo,I found this a great help.With lots of info and tips to help you gain some knoledge
