Opened My Eyes
Mr. Pitts came into my view after 9/11, when his open letter to a terrorist began making the rounds via email. It was that column alone (9/14/01) that had me rushing to purchase the Kindle edition of his book.In his selected columns, I learned what it's like to be a minority. Sure I have friends who aren't Caucasian like me, but we never really talk about what makes us different. I've never stopped to think about what it might be like for my male African-American friends. To me, they are simply male friends. Some of his columns made me angry (he likes to interview God off and on, and I don't agree with his portrayal of God). Some of his columns brought me back to that moment in time when time stood still (remember 9/11) and those moments in politics that no one can believe. I take it that Mr. Pitts is a solid Democrat; I am not. But no matter; he brings an insight to his op-eds that leave you with the inescapable truth that this is a man who has a passion about the things he writes. He makes you think, and he makes you passionate about a subject you might not have considered otherwise. My only question: when is his next book of colunms coming out - the ones written after 2008?

This collection is as important in its insights now as it was when written.
Well, I must like this collection of columns by Mr, Pitts as I have now bought two used copies and a Kindle version. The used copies are to give to others as I think what Pitts has to say is important, today just as it was when he published the columns and then the collection as a book. I am struck by the reality that we really haven't made much progress in terms of equality in our country. However, Pitts writes with humor, with candor and invites us to achieve the insights and world view to take action. He also has a lot of wisdom when looking at the family, not just at community and society. I will likely buy more copies of this book to share with others. Would we all had the skill to lay the issues out so clearly as a motivator to make needed change really happen!

Should be required reading!
Awesome book! I was unfamiliar with Leonard Pitts' writing before reading this book. It's a gem and should be required reading for all people. The book begins with insightful parenting essays. They are delightful. However, the real meat of the book is Mr. Pitts' columns on issues that are too frequently polarized or omitted from our national conversation. He brings a breath of fresh air and sanity to politics and racism. His thoughts are expressed in honest, logical, succinct, thought provoking, and engaging ways. I did not want it to end. Therefore, I've become an avid reader of his column in the Miami Herald. I sincerely hope his voice of reason will continue for years to come.

Unfortunately, Maybe Timeless Writing
Granted, he was preaching to the choir virtually every column but what sermons they were. His writing is terse but full of insight. I say is because he is a "I can't wait to read his next column" type. The best thing that can be said is his writings are still relevant today. While I hope not, I suspect his writing will be timeless because racism is not going anywhere. It would be wonderful for his messages to fade into antiquity. But, until that day arrives, keep the spotlight shining, Mr. Pitts.

Definitely buy this book.
Leonard Pitts is my favorite columnist. He is such a compassionate and kind person. The way he writes makes you completely understand what he is saying. He has bought tears to my eyes so many times. I travel for work and I don't always get newspapers that carry his column. When I found that he wrote this book I couldn't wait to read it. If your like me and love to read the editorial pages of newspapers you will love this book. If you would like a better understanding of issues of this world read this book. Mr Pitts has written several other books and I wii definitely be reading the rest of his books.

good balanced writing
an excellent source to explore a balanced honest view of the world, particularly race relations in our country. the first section was also charming in its various takes on family life and parenthood, though it didn't seem to fit the tone of the rest of the book. pitts is to be admired for his honesty, even when he turns that with uncomfortable but right on target comments at the smug "entitled" actions and thoughts of white society. he is extremely fair in turning that same withering righteousness on the elements of the black community he disagrees with as well. thoroughly enjoyed this book because it courageously embraces an open dialogue about race in the United States without hiding behind a veil of false political correctness.
