Q: How well does it grip the fabric?

It grips the fabric well but you have to frequently reposition the hoops (even the larger one). I have actually stopped using them for this reason unless I am doing micro-stippling.

Q: How would these work for free-motion embroidery?

These work well for quilting. I can't answer your question of whether it will work with free-motion embroidery. I have an embroidery machine and can't envision how these would aid you in embroidery.

Q: Can both the hoops be used together, with fabric in between them, like a round hoop?

No. That is not what they are made for. They are two distinctly different sizes and will not nest snugly like an embroidery hoop would. They are intended to be used while free motion quilting to hold a small area firm while moving the quilt under the needle.

Q: what are the inside dimensions of each of the hoops?

The larger hoop is appro. 7 1/4 inches and the smaller hoop is appro. 5 1/2 .
