Amazing boldness, smell and taste.
This is the best coffee money can buy. The most delicious, dark, bold, great smelling coffee ever. I will never want any other kind.

Delicious and affordable
Coffee for Coffee Lovers! I've bought Sumatra coffee since 1999. It's rich and dark. I've made it in coffeemakers, French presses, and pour overs for flavor and strength control (other coffees quite simply, disappoint!). This recent order arrived and I opened it up: the beans are shiny and freshly roasted, then I made a cup (2:30 p.m.) I may get to bed late tonight, but this is a treat that is worth it. I cant justify "buying" Ccoffee from a shop - it's just too expensive to indulge in; I make my own to haul to work in my thermos and have for years. This TASTES like "Coffee shop coffee" and it's priced affordably.

quality bean
The aroma of the bean is incredible. The flavor profile is a little more nutty than it is bright and fruity, which explains the 4 star verses a 5. Just doesn't quite match my personal taste profile. However, it's hard to beat the quality for the price especially when you consider they have 5lb bags available.

...and then all was right with the world.
About a year ago now, Barrie House closed its doors and Sumatra Mandheling coffee, not wrecked by over roasting, became an elusive quest. When roasted dark, Sumatra is an ordinary unexceptional bean, but roasted light to light/medium, it is extraordinary. Overtones of hot cocoa, nuances of pecans, and perhaps its most remarkable quality to be uniquely drinkable. The low acidity of Sumatra makes it a coffee you can drink without worrying about coffee burps or heartburn. I have never understood why roasters seem to pick this particular bean to roast into oblivion, dark roast Sumatra Mandheling bean vendors outnumber medium ones on Amazon by 20 to 1 and of the ones that do -claim- to be medium roast, they aren't, I've tried many, and gotten nearly black, greasy beans that have had any identity of their origin converted into smoke in some roasting facility somewhere. What a waste it is to ship beans half way around the globe to fry them into generic Starbucks like garbage. These beans, on the other hand are roasted light to medium, just a hair past 400F, as Sumatra should be. My burr grinder holds about a pound of beans, I topped it off with these beans over the last of another vendors "medium" roast beans. The line between the two was visually distinct. When these beans hit the grinder burrs, the sound of the grind changed, as it was no longer having to contend with all the oil from the over roasting gumming up the works. The grinder was grinding coffee again not slugging through some coffee/oil slurry. That first batch, even though it was still very much tainted by the prior beans, was a return to normalcy that just improved over the next several days. These beans are what the Sumatra coffee drinking experience should be. I don't know how long this vendor has been selling these on Amazon, but if it is any more than very recently, then I have no idea why it hasn't come up in search results. This is a search I do probably every couple weeks. I have tried Sumatra beans from dozens of roasters over the years, some have been passable, most have been terrible, including several "roasted to order" vendors, few, very few have been what they should be, or claimed to be.

Another cup of joe...
Wow! What an amazing deal! Thanks to the incredibly wide scope of Amazon's "Always please the customer!" thinking, I'm subscribing to a monthly delivery of a 5-pound bag of totally awesome fresh Dark Sumatra coffee beans (from Coffee Bean Direct Coffee Roasters). These fresh-roasted beans make an exceptionally terrific, totally smooth, rich and deliciously tasty cup of coffee, some of the very best ever. And the price is just right. With Amazon's flexible coffee bean subscription plan, I get the freshest beans exactly when I want and need them, I don't have to fret about going to the coffee store or market or running out of anything. I just grind my fresh aromatic beans before bed each night and I have absolutely fabulous hot Dark Sumatran coffee the next morning. These fresh beans are so richly aromatic that my [non coffee drinking] partner likes to grind and set-up the coffee at night just so he can enjoy these Dark Sumatra beans in his own fashion. Amazon.com sends me my 5-pound bag of fresh roasted beans promptly each and every month. I can suspend my order or purchase more beans, change my delivery dates and of course, I can always choose from Coffee Bean Direct Coffee Roasters' excellent stock of the very best fresh-roasted coffee beans available from almost anywhere in the world. I once lived in Hawaii's famed Kona coffee district and had my own absolutely fresh, just picked-off-the-tree coffee beans from my own trees, I could roast those fresh, tasty Kona beans myself whenever and however I wanted. This was a totally unique coffee lovers' experience, but Coffee Bean Direct Coffee Roasters' coming straight to my door courtesy of Amazon.com expertise is just as awesome and a lot less messy and time-consuming. I have the worlds' best coffee from the worlds' best retailer every month with absolutely no fuss. Please Amazon.com, find a way to stop by in the mornings, brew and serve some of my deliciously hot Dark Sumatra coffee (don't forget to wash the pot and used cup please!), that would be almost perfection. Oh, and did I mention making fresh, hot scones? Maybe? Thank you Amazon.com, you've changed the way I shop! And it's great!

very good coffee at a great price
i know there are finer beans out there at a greater cost, but at anywhere near this price you would be hard pressed to beat this coffee. even though at this time there is only one other review, i tried out coffee bean direct based on the strength of reviews here on amazon on several of their other varieties - if you do a search, you will see that amazon carries many other beans by this company. before ordering, i also googled the company, i suggest you do the same to see all the different varieties they have to offer at coffee bean direct dot com (it's still cheaper to order through amazon due to no shipping cost). i chose this particular bean because the roast is medium - we've been using a darker roast in the past because my wife typically likes her coffee beans heavily roasted. however, we recently got a new coffee maker as an anniversary gift from my parents (the capresso coffee team gs - Capresso 464.05 CoffeeTeam GS 10-Cup Digital Coffeemaker with Conical Burr Grinder - a very nice grinder/brewer combo with which we are quite pleased) that is more versatile than our cheap burr grinder and french press combo of the past. anyway, that's a long story, the point of which is that i wanted a coffee that i could grind on the fine setting on our new coffee maker, and this one seemed like it would produce a nice brew on the finest grind - and now that we've lived with this coffee for a few days, i'm happy to report that you grind this up nice and fine and squeeze all the subtle flavors out of that way if you so choose. this coffee is as the way coffee bean direct describes it on their website description and accompanying roast/acidity/body chart - it is a nice bodied coffee with medium acidity and a lot of flavor (my wife and i both think it has fruit notes in it, especially as it nears room temperature). i'm quite pleased with it, and i plan to try another of their beans as soon as we go through these five pounds we have now.
