Fast with excellent quality output but prohibitively expensive to maintain for high-volume usage
I should state that I did not purchase this printer from Amazon. I acquired it from another reputable vendor who was offering a 3-year on-site warranty which only bumped the price up by £30 - well worth the additional outlay! More on this later. My previous experience of an OKI A3 colour laser printer - the C830dn model - was good but, after 15 years, it was getting mechanically "tired" and developed a tendency to dump toner all over its innards! This C824dn model may sounds like a downgrade but its specs are slightly better, so OKI's model numbering is a bit strange! As the user guide suggests, physical installation really requires two people for safe handling. Even with all the toner cartridges, diffuser and duplexing unit removed, the remaining "shell" of the printer weighs over 30 kilograms. But I see that similarly-spec'ed offerings from other manufactturers are similarly weighty. (I can't actually see why this should be - I guess the internal base of the unit is mainly comprised of metal and a hefty power transformer.)I mostly use the printer for lightweight needs such as simple documents. I usually opt for two-sided output and in this regard the automatic duplexing feature works very well and quickly. There is excellent, sharply-defined reproduction of (colour) text and imagery.Overall build quality is reasonable. The front control panel and the top hatch to access the toner cartridges aren't quite flush with each other as they should be, perhaps suggesting that the latching mechanism for the latter needs adjusting slightly. Either way, though, this doesn't affect the operation of the unit. The main paper tray is reasonably solid but is a bit "rough" in operation when it comes to adjusting its internal brackets for different paper sizes. You also have to select the paper size and rotation (ie portrait or landscape) via a dial, which on my unit is quite stiff to turn. Maybe it will loosen up a bit with use. My old C830dn was better in this respect. The unit also has a fold-out paper tray. This has fair build quality but it wouldn't stand up to much by way of accidental knocks, so maybe not ideal in a small, busy, crowded office. With my old C830dn, after a few years the paper would "slip" on the rubber rollers, causing a jam. However wiping these down with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol would restore reliable operation for a few months before requiring repetition. So this was essentially a routine maintenance task rather than a fault. I expect I'll need to do the same with the C824dn.The printer comes with a DVD for driver installation. This was an oddly lengthy process - took around 20 minutes, including automated download of firmware and software updates - but was straightforward to carry out, hooking up to my router and caused no issues with my PC running Windows 10 Professional.I mentioned the three-year on-site warranty that is available from some vendors. To qualify for this you must register the printer on OKI's website. Note that you'll need to quote the unit's serial numer which, unhelpfully, is posted on the bottom edge of its rear side - so make a note of this before physical installation! However, although you will receive an automated email from OKI to acknowledge registration, the wording around the warranty entitlement is extremely vague with no mention of either the period or its on-site arrangement. I had to 'phone OKI and insist that they send me a further, "hand-written", unambiguous email for clarification. In terms of replenishing toners, bear in mind that the cartridges which come with the unit are "starter" ones with a measley 2,500 A4-sized pages quoted. A full set of 10,000-page cartridges will cost you around £800!! A full set of replacement toner drums - claimed to have a lifetime of 30,000 pages each - cost the same. As such this means that once you've replaced the toners three times and the drums once, it's thereafter far cheaper to simply buy another printer! So this is not a printer for the high volume use one would need in an office environment serving several users. (It's only ideal-ish for me because of my very small amount of use.) Incidentally you must purchase the "genuine" OKI parts in order to maintain the warranty.+ Fast and excellent quality printing of documents and images. (5 / 5)+ Overall reasonable build quality. (3 / 5)+ 3-year on-site warranty (from some vendors).+ Ease of use. (4 / 5)- Not suitable for high-volume use due to the cost of replacement toner cartridges and drums.- Stingey "starter" toner cartridges.- Very heavy! You will need a lovely assistant!- Automated warranty acknowledgement communication from OKI vague and ambiguous.- Main paper tray slightly awkward to use.Like any other A3 colour laser printer, this is an expensive unit. However my research suggested that you would pay even more for one of a similar specification from better-known manufacturers (and their units seem to be similarly weighty).Overall I award the printer 3 out of 5 stars. That might not sound great but in over thirty years of owning laser printers, I've yet to find one I'd ever accord top marks to! So, despite the above quibbles, this offering from OKI is worthy of your consideration IF you have low-volume needs (or you own a Range Rover, in which case you clearly have more money than sense!) - particularly while the extended warranty is available.
