Stronghold Games Fabled Fruit Limes Expansion

Adding a longer lasting flavour to Friedemann Friese's innovative Fabled Fruit
Fabled Fruit: The Lime Expansion (2017) is a welcome expansion for Friedemann Friese's legacy-style game Fabled Fruit (2016). For those unfamiliar with the base game, it has a whimsical theme in which players are animals moving to collect fruit in an effort to mix fabled fruit juices. The game-play consists of a blend of three main mechanics: worker placement, set collection, and a legacy-style "fable" concept which involves constantly changing options courtesy of a deck of different location cards. Each location offers unique benefits, but the options and mechanisms available will change as the game advances, with old locations eventually disappearing to be replaced by new ones, offering different combinations and possibilities. The problem is: what happens when you've made your way through the giant deck of location cards from the base game? By this point you'll already have had significant mileage from the game, and most people take around 20 games to get this far. While you can certainly revisit the original location cards, by this time you will likely be looking for a new challenge, and that's where Fabled Fruit: The Lime Expansion comes in.First of all, this expansion adds another 20 new locations to the game, which offer new mechanics and possibilities. Experienced players will quickly warm up to these new additions, and appreciate their cleverness and fun. They're at least as good as the ones that come with the base game, if not better. But there's another new addition that comes along with this: limes. Buying juice from these new locations requires you to have a lime card along with your other cards, and special actions are needed to get them. All this means that there is a new focal point of interest that takes the game in a slightly new direction, so it doesn't just feel like more of the same.I would estimate that the expansion should add approximately 10 games to get through. I wouldn't recommend this for people who are still making their way through the original Fabled Fruit, since it doesn't really add new mechanics as such, or a whole new layer of game-play with additional complexity. Clearly this is geared to people who have completed the base game and are looking to continue their journey of exploration just that little bit further. If you enjoyed the original and are hungry for more, you are certain to like what you find here. On the other hand if you had mixed feelings about Fabled Fruit, what this expansion offers isn't likely to cause you to revise your opinion, since it is essentially more of the same, rather than completely changing things up.Fabled Fruit is another Friedemann Friese triumph, and this expansion helps add a longer-lasting flavour for those who have arrived at the bottom of the stack of the original location cards and are looking for more. The base game already has a lot of replayability courtesy of the fable mechanic, which generates constantly changing and new options, thereby giving the "filler" a whole new sense of replayability. Friese has found a way to inject new life into the familiar mechanics of worker placement and set collection by combining them with his fable mechanic, thereby making each successive game feel new, and forcing you to adapt your strategies within each game. The Lime expansion stretches this replayability even further, without turning the original game into anything more complex, but retaining the feel of a family-friendly filler. It takes real genius to produce a simple game that gives enjoyment to non-gamers and families, but is so engaging that it can even keep gamers returning to it for more at the same time. Yet that is exactly what Friedemann Friese has achieved with Fabled Fruit, which is easy to learn, and yet has enough variety and decisions to keep you coming back to it, with constantly new things to discover and explore. The expansion is a welcome addition that allows those who enjoyed the taste of the original to refill their glass, and come back for just that little bit more, with a fresh and longer lasting taste.
